A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I got my car setup by a garage a few weeks back as it was running abit rough, they did a great job tuning it and they only charged me a couple of quid in parts for new ignition points
Me and my housemate have been having an arguement over wether the ignition points are just the connections on the inside on the distributor cap or is it something actually inside the distributor itself?
How does a distributor function and how does the dwell (sp?) angle effect things?
many thanks
edit: oh and its a 1.1 8v mk1 golf
A:
the points are things inside the dizzy that open and close to send a spark to the rotor arm which they sends it to the right lead and plug
A:
The distributor is two parts in one.
At the base of the dizzy are the points, they are a sprung loaded switch that are open and closed by the dizzy shaft, whaich at that point is square, creating 4 openings of the switch.
When the points open they trun off the 12V supply to the coil, this creates a colapsing magnetic field which creates a low amperage/high voltage in the high tension side of the coil (a bloody great spark).
The spark then leaves the coil down the king or coil lead to the centre of the dizzy cap. It then goes inside the dizzy cap and along the rotor arm where it jumps to which ever plug lead contact is closest.
The spark then goes down the plug lead, jumps across the plug cap and goes back to earth.
Hope that makes sense!
p.s. points look like this
