mk2 syncro 20vt

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hellol Gents I have a mk2 syncro and am wondering if a 1.8T engine would be a suitable donor?? Would the syncro's drivetrain be able for the 1.8T power??
A:

Hello Shane, you got home ok then . Must have been a long day LOL.
Keep us posted of how you get on, it will be good to see the car when its done.
A:

As far as I am aware the Syncro drive train isn't upto huge power. I think if you want to go for big power 1.8T then many of the parts have to be exchanged for Rallye bits. Even then, I belive some bits have to be uprated still.
A:

MMM. I see. Well i hope if a 1.8T is too powerful, A 2.0 16v ABF would be acceptable??
A:

I think Pauls plan was to use the 1.8T (about 350hp) fit a Rallye gear box and an Audi TT rear diff (might be worng on the rear diff)
He did talk about using the floor pan and fitting it to a 2 door MkII or a Corrado at one point as well.
But plans changed.
Good luck with what ever way you go with it.
A:

people on the golf syncro forum have said that if you replace the gearbox then the rest is up to the same power as a rally. If you have the car go for it IMO. I must say when i put an 8v gtio in mine the gear box was not suited as the ratios were all wrong. the rally box should sort that
A:

a lot of it depends on how much power you put through it and how you use it
Pops was running a tuned 1.8t through a syncro drivetrain and snapped the input shaft into the rear diff. Once he'd converted to TT running gear (Haldex) it seemed much more suited to taking big power. He was quite prone to launching the car quite hard though...
One of the advantages of starting with a syncro of course is that you do have a floorpan designed to take the running gear - so even if you end up cutting out the tunnel to use in a 3 door shell it's still a very useful donor.
Mind you - if you can find a Passat syncro that provides a userful rear beam IIRC

Thats the puppy, couldnt think of the name of it .

Thanks for info lads. When sciroccotune said that ratios were all wrong, in what way were they wrong?? Revving and going nowhere???
A:

From what Paul said 1st-2nd-3rd are very close 3rd = about 70 mph at the red line but 4th and 5th are about the same as the 8v Gti box.
I will dig out the ratios for you when i get chance.
A:

yep i agree with what has been said, best starting with a syncro and upgrading as needed. I know guys that run 200bhp+ with no problems and some that have run more but i never got reports on those, i do know that all started well at least lol.
As for the ratios the box was to high reving, Mad 20v is correct the 5th was about the same as a normal box but the rest were too close. It was good for off the line and to about 40-50 but after that you wished you had a longer box to get good power and even a few MPG.
Having said all that it may work quite well with a 16v and indeed was totally fine in reality.
Totally fantastic car which i really miss, i only sold it as it had to many doors. Looking back i should have kept it and finished it off as it being so light etc mad it muchos fun off the line and in the wet :)

Thanks for all the info guys. I have a 2.0 16V ABF engine, box and loom in the shed which i reckon i'll fit for starters. (and hope it won't turn the running gear into a grenade) The engine is fron a '97 mk3 golf. Does anyone know if this would have an immobiliser and if so is it the key and transponder set-up~?? If so would it be easier to run it on K-Jet???
A:

EEEEH, anyone???
A:

syncro running gear should be able to handle ABF power - and i know plenty of people use complete 16v K-jet with success (Tub's car was running ABF with K-jet)
A:

Thanks for info. Does anyone know about the immobiliser on the '97 ABF??? would the conversion into the pre 90 spec fuse box be possible??? I have engine, ecu and loom. Would it be just like wiring up an 8v digi???
A:

Any ideas on the ABF question??????????????????????????????????
A:

Anyone??
A:

Hi
Does anyone know if you can get a 3 door syncro as all the ones i have seen advertised for sale are 5 doors!

Yes, 3 door syncros are out there but there are far more five door ones.
A:

Hi Shane, don't know if this answers to late or not.....
The engines ecu that you have will have an inbuilt immobilliser, so you're only option is to get an early
