went to view a mk2 16v golf gti today. low power??.

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

went to view a mk2 golf gti 16v today. it was a good sound car overall. seemed to be lacking in the power department though. how can i check this to make sure its true?.
the car had good pull but only made power really high up, above 5k, the rev counter is always sticking and then shooting up, not sure if this is linked. there is no way it was doing 0-60 in 7.3 seconds (book time?) in my eyes. it needed to be shifted right down to 2nd to get it moving up any hill with any real gradient, is this normal??.
the gearbox also was quite hard to get into first and felt very sloppy.
if anyone wants to add me on messenger and give me there views on the 16v golf mk2 i would apreciate Rallye****@hotmail.com
or leave me your views here??.
thanks luke

sorry for the swearing. it was not intentional its the name of my msn addy. (its not big and its not clever i know.

How's it going. It would be very difficult for anyone to explain to you how quick a gti should be. Certainly if you need to shift down, something doesn't seem right. Can you get your hands on another gti just to get a drive in.That'd probably be the easiest way to compare like with like. Having said that, I've owned quite a few valvers and power does seem to differ from car to car. Hope this helps
A:

Definitely not normal. Either a timing/fuelling or alltogether different problem.
A:

maybe im being harsh on her. she seemed gutless in fifth at 30 is that normal?. once you got it high up in the revs it pulled well. My old car was a 106 rallye series 1 with 1.6 16v saxo vts engine and weighed 780kg fully stripped, and short ratio box so maybe im just comparing it to that too much. 0-60 of 6.4 timed.
i liked the car just want advice from people?.
A:

It should pull fairly well low down in every gear if its set up correctly. I live in an area with loads and loads of hills and I can go up them in 4th @ 40mph under 3000rpm no problems at all.
A:

what fuel should be used in them? and are there any dangers to useing 95 ron unleaded?.
A:

They can tend to pink on 95 RON unless you've retarded the timing, which costs you performance. I always put super unleaded in mine, if I can get it.
I've heard from several people, although it hasn't happened on mine, that if the cam chain stretches they lose a lot of power. The chain controls the timing between the two cams.

Yer apparently there is a noticable lack of low end power.
A:

what should i do then do you think? get it set up on a rolling road and buy the car??

Buy the damn thing.
From experience you may find that if the last owner had the t/belt replaced and reinstalled incorrectly(by some of these fast fit garages) the car will feel 'flat'. I have seen this happen many times. If the car is in general good condition and the engine is good on the bottom end then buy the thing it will be an easy fix. A good working 16v motor can hit 60 in around 7.4secs all on STD parts well optimised.

Hello Toyotec, hows things? - Did you compare both of my maps to see what vince altered?

Like you say it has not happened on yours and I am sure the many ppl have not actually measured this loss back to back that they say is alot.
My car on a stretched chain ( sounding like a diesel) and blow by with 190K miles was still hitting 60 in 7.5secs on average. Compare that to another car of the same spec but with 113K and 4K on new chain and belt getting there in 7.2 secs. All ran OEM sytems but optimised.

It does. Mine rattles like mad,and is well down on power. I'd say it's near 8v level, the shame!
A:

To buy or not to buy?!?
If the rest of the car is good - no signs of accident damage or repairs, reasonable history and the price is sensible... and it's a nice colour Then use the lack of power as negotiating leverage to get the price down.
If the car's right then the engine is worth fixing. If the timing has been retarded to run 95 RON then it'll be way down on power anyway
What was the rest of it like?
PS... the gear linkage is probably in need of its bushes replacing - under a tenner. Checking the gearbox oil level wouldn't be a bad idea either.
A:

there was a random box covered in gaffa tape under the bonnet with a little led in it and two connecters one black and one red. very odd?? any ideas??

Probably a bodged alarm......
