mk2 16v early (small) vs late (large) airbox

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I have a '88 GTI 16v with a fully rebuilt 9a race engine going in. I have a 4 branch manifold with milltek exhaust and lots of polishing and porting of the head so airflow should be good.
So, I've read that the early (smaller) 16v airbox I have will be too restrictive.
Will my early metering head simply transfer to the later airbox?
Apart from buying the later airbox and filter is there anything else i'll need for this modification?
~Is it worth it?
Cheers

Interesting...I've got an 88 16v with a 9A in it... what are the dimensions of your airbox? (filter size)
A:

The later airfilter is defo a good 2 inches wider than the earlier one. So much greater surface area. I guess they redesigned the inside of the airbox to improve airflow too..
Think they changed over in 1989 when the gti went big bumper. I.e 1990 Model Year

Hi,
I`ve the following:
Mk1 with a 9A - smaller airbox - filter size 333mm x 127mm x 40mm
Mk2 (big bumper) with a 9A - larger airbox - filter size 306mm x 181mm x 29mm
Volume `wise` the Mk1 has the larger capacity by ~ 5% ... whether it flows more air though ?

I think the plastic breather pipe from metering head to manifold is slightly larger as well on later models?
A:

I think the input and outlet pipe are likely to be the restrictions, rather than the box itself. More cold air ducting on the intake side might help more than changing the box I think. I haven't looked at the size of the pipe to the inlet manifold. I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same though.

Metering head outlet `pipes` look the same but my engines are far from standard ... made up from what suits the installation best ..... I hope !
Both airboxes have the bases removed leaving the metering head attached to the filter and a retaining `rim`
Mk1 front grille is single headlight with the previously solid offside section drilled to allow more air to the `box`
Mk2 front grille is the standard twin headlight and used to run a duct behind the grille to the `box` but is now removed for ease of access to belts etc.
