mk1 gti fuel filler hiss

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Should my 82 1800 gti filler cap hiss when i take the cap off as im having starting problems and need to know if this is the norm...
thanks

i had this problem with my mk1 a couple of years ago, you need a new filler cap. basically its causing excess pressure in the fuel system and not allowing the pump to pull enough fuel through. thats why it doesent start properly. i think there is a breather hole in it which is blocked, eventually the pump will go which it did on mine. a new cap should sort this out
A:

Yes it should hiss, the GTI cap is of a non-vented design (you can get vented ones that look the same).

mine was a little more than a hiss, more of a woosh for a few seconds, i had trouble to get the cap off, there was so much suction !!!
A:

surely that must effect fuel flow? i dont think mine hisses at all :P
A:

They are meant to hiss, the tank is under negative pressure so that rather than vent fumes into the air, they suck in fresh air instead. All about emissions control......

Mine was doing this, swapped out the gravity valve and that seems to have cured it.
