MKIV Which Model??

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hi i currently own a MKII Golf 16v but as it was made in 1989 its getting a little tired!!
I'm looking at getting a Golf MKIV 1.8T but i have heard that i should be plumping for the 2001 model onwards. Is this correct and can anyone give me an idea into why this model is better?
I heard it is easy to tune and that you get a better return on your modification money!!
This is a big concern for me as i only have around 6K to spend and the spec i want and this year will blow my budget out of the water!!
Advice on this matter will be greatly recieved as i'm looking to buy the car over the next few weeks!!
Cheers boys.............. and girls??

The 2001 models are better purely because VW piled on more standard equipment. Other than that I dont think there are many advantages over the older ones. The 1.8T engine is easily chipped so no worries on thats score, but I would advise suspension upgrades as the ride is a little too soft for GTI standards.
As long as it has been regularly maintained I dont think that an older model will cause you any concerns.

thing is if you wanna go for 180bp itll cost around 12k with 6k the option i used picked up a 1.8t 150bhp got it chipped by revo £400 now around the 200bhp mark results.......awesome
anycar will give u probs if u dont take care of it

and they're DBW, so any remaps will be more potent.

I had an early a MK4 18T on a 1999 `S` plate with a MTM chipped brain from an expired A3. It was a massive improvement over standard and well recommended. I put about 20K `spirited ` miles on it and it was mechanically spot on and reliablity and MPG also excellent. My brother had the same year car with the REVO conversion and had the same benefits.
I would do it now before you change your mind an dont worry about getting a pre 2001 model. I understand the only real difference from a REVO point of view is the free trial isnt possible on the pre 2000 throttle cable cars and the power is only 5 or so bhp down on the FBW post 2000 cars after the remap.

the post 2001 GTIs (maybe 2002) have upgraded suspension aswell. its a slightly firmer ride and its 15mm closer to the ground.
