A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I'm having some overheating problems with my Mk2 Gti 8v. When the engine gets to it's normal operating temperature (temp gauge is half way between the scale) it loses water through the expansion tank. I've checked all the seals/pipes leading to the tank, it appears that the water is escaping from the expansion tank cap even though the seal is fine and cap is screwed on tight. An obvious explanation would be that the head gasket has gone, howevr there doesn't appear to be any water in the oil. I would appeciate any advice anyone can give. Cheers.
A:
does the fan come on?
A:
Have you checked the expansion tank for cracks?
A:
No the fan doesn't come on, it begins to lose water before the temp goes above normal (according to the temp gauge).
A:
has the fan ever come on?? have you checked it?
A:
Not sure...only had the car two days, will check.
A:
how much water does it lose?
A:
it loses about 2 litres, which seems to escape through the expansion tank overflow.
A:
theres not a overflow.....it should recirculate
A:
Sounds like the cap is knackered and not holding system pressure.
A:
Is the cap black?
If yes it needs replacing with a blue one from VAG.
A:
cap is black, i'll try and source a blue on efrom somewhere. Thanks for the info.
