High mileage 1.8T?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

What is the general rule of thumb for 20v lumps for head refurb??
IIRC 16v's usually like the exhaust guides done @ 80000 miles which usually ties in with the head gasket leaking.
Any body got any experience of high milage 20v turbos?
A:

I used to have a Leon Cupra with the 180bhp 20vt. That had done almost 140,000 miles when I sold it. I bought it from a mate, at around 120,000 miles we had the head off because of a wood screw finding its way into one of the cylinders whilst he was driving on the M25!!!
Other than damage from the screw, the head was fine, i.e. valves, guides etc still had plenty of life.
The exhaust side of the turbo had a few cracks, as did the exhaust manifold, it also needed a new MAF, but mechanically the engine appeared to be up to the usual VW quality.

how did a self tapper get into the engine may i ask?

I have no idea, it actually got into two of the cylinders, you could see marks from it in the head and on the pistons. The car was running fine, he was on his way home after doing a long journey, whilst sat in a traffic jam, it suddenly started to make a loud clattering noise and the ECU warning light came on. We have never come up with an explenation for it. There was no damage to the valves or seats, so it probably did not enter through the intake system, if it did, would have needed to get through the air filter and maf!
