A&Q about 350Z
Q:
We’re having real problems getting an 88 MK2 8v Digi to start. Most of the time it turns over but when it does eventually catch it just cuts out again.
We had it running for about 30/40 seconds but to say it sounded rough is an understatement. It was idling at about 600rpm and any attempt at throttle just made it cut out.
What I have noticed is that when you turn on the ignition the fuel pump comes on but doesn’t go off! i.e. normally it would come on for a couple of seconds (to prime) and then switch off, but its not it's just staying on. Any ideas on what this could be?
A:
Possibly a faulty fuel pump relay. If its sticking when it should only be priming, it may be flooding the engine.
A:
could it be 1 or more injectors are staying open and flooding the engine? would also explain why the fuel pump doesnt cut out. whip the plugs out you should be able to tell then surely?
A:
doesnt the fuel pump being on all the time mean that the ecu is knackered?
Think it is in limp mode, sure I read it on here somwere.

Interesting… keep em coming..
I am almost 99% it is electrical related. Sometimes, when you try and turn it over it really struggles and weird lights illuminate on the dash (like the full beam) and the clock display goes mad! Any idea’s where the fault could lie? I’ve checked (and cleaned) all the battery connections and also the earth to the body and gearbox..
Relays are possible.. do the relays from a 93 mk3 digi fit in the mk2??? As I may try swapping some over from mine!
A:
It's a blown ECU, normally down to a dodgy gearbox-chassis leg earth. Nothing to do with the relay.

That will be because the cylinders are full of fuel
A:
I had the same prob and it was the fuel pump relay, pump just runs even when engine is not running, as for the poor running do the simple things first, clean throttle, breathers check timing and idle, if they all come out ok then go onto ECU.
A:
Ben8v. You have PM
A:
Fuel pressure regulator? Could be returning all pumped fuel to the tank, so no pressure in the fuel rail => ecu wont switch off fuel pump. I think this would also cause the diabolical running.
Could also check the fuel lines on the pressure side for leaks, but im sure you would have picked up on the smell if that was your problem!

agreed, also time for a oil change as the sump will be full of petrol

I can well believe it being the earth strap causing all these issues, one question: where can you get new ones of these?? I've tried VW and they say they don't make them anymore!!

Go to halfruads and pick up a length of heavy gauge amp earth wire and some ring connectors and make your own

We got it sorted yesterday and its now running like a dream. It was indeed a dodgy gearbox earth and dead ECU that was the cause!
We took the supporting leg of the gearbox and sanded down all the contact points until we could see our faces in it!! As well as fitting a new 4AWG earth cable and brand new battery terminal. Judging by the state of the arm and connectors I’m surprised it even worked for as long as it did!! A lesson learnt the hard way here! We should have cleaned it all up when we fixed the clutch only a few weeks ago!! Oh well you live and learn!
We drained the oil before starting it after changing the ECU as advised and what came out was truly shocking! Over 5 litres of runny black water that reeked of petrol came out!! I can’t believe how much it dumped in there!! We changed the oil and filter twice just to make sure it was all out! Hopefully this hasn’t done any long term damage to the engine..
I’d Also a like to give a MASSIVE thanks to Seany who let us have his old digifant ECU, thanks A LOT for that mate and for the others here who have given spot on advice (as per usual!)
A:
No problem at all mate. Glad you got your car sorted now
A:
Blown ECU!!!!! No Doubt
A:
I think he's already established that.......
