Which way to go?? tune or upgrade

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

hey guys i have a mk1 gti 1.8 8v dx
havent had it long and im a little disappointed with the performance of it, although it does need a tune up, apparently there is a really good place for old veedubs in Aylesbury anyone know ofit?
anyways what shall i do tune the dx up or go for the usual 16v route??
realistically what can i expect from the dx and will it be silly money to get decent power from it??

sent you a pm

budget?
ABF engine would be best bang for buck although a 2.0 bottom end would make a big difference if you wanted a cheap instant performance upgrade

You can achieve around 145hp from an 1800 with bolt on bits (exhaust, head, cam, vernier, intake mods etc) providing the standard bottom end is in good nick (though most arnt now due to age & mileage), figure on around 1,200-1,400 in parts. A 2ltr bottom end will get you up to around the 155hp mark with the above bits (a good bottom end will cost around 150+ depending on condition and any parts or re-furbing needed).
As stated above, best VFM would be 2ltr 16v conversion. Engines start at around 300-400 quid depending on condition and will give you around the 160hp mark with some intake and exhaust work, but obviously more work is needed in the conversion. Should still work out cheaper than modding the 8v though. It all depends on what you want from the car, maybe after a good set-up & tune, a peferformance exhaust & intake tweek maybe enough for you to liven it up a little without going inside the engine (£££ !).
Start with a tune/set-up on yr 8v and work from there. It should feel lively enough for most useage though tme and mileage may have taken the edge off it now. Find a good local tuner who knows how to set up k-jet injection and can fault find if required. If the tune does'nt improve things there could be faults in the system, a faulty warm-up reg is a favorite or rust and muck in the the whole system caused by a rusty fuel filler neck will cause all sorts of havoc.
The more you can do yrself before you take it to a tuner the better, fitting yr own plugs, air filter etc will save you a bit of time and cash at the garage before they get involved in the set-up, there's plenty of people on here that can help.
Good luck.

ive got a stainless manifold and exhaust system with a k&n panel filter. servicing it at the moment all the filters etc.
im facinated by this changing the bottom end to a 2ltr! what does this do?? is it a nice n easy bolt on jobby or is there more to it??
shes a bit tempremental when startin, sometimes she starts but very sluggishly and then give a poke of the throttle comes alive again. and my filler neck is rusty on the outside but seems fine inside, well i hope it is now, easy way of checkin this for sure??
steve dude, i would absolutely love that engine!! if only i had the cash, if u still got it in a few months il b interested!!! y are you selling it? u goin for another upgrade??
thanks for ur advice guys

Take a look at the 2ltr 8v thread at the top of the engine page on this forum. You can either over-bore your current engine to 82.5 0r 83mm (1900 conversion) and fit the longer stroke 92.8mm 2ltr crank or look for a 2ltr bottom end (block assembly) from a later car (MK3 Golf, some Audi's, Seat's etc) and fit your head to that. Depends what you call easy !
Get the service and tune up sorted first (set ignition timing to 6 degrees, clean out the metering head and check the plate height and centralise if required, set idle mixture to 1.5-1.8%). If still sluggish, check pipework & hoses for splits or loose fitting(air leaks), check injector "o" rings and inlet manifold gasket for air leaks etc.
As long as the filler neck does'nt have any holes in it you maybe ok (unless it has been replaced before). Fit a new fuel filter, tip out the fuel from the old filter onto a non-absorbing surface. If there's water in the system it'll float on the fuel, could be a part of yr problems.
