Mk4 GTI Turbo overheating...

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Well I only got this car on Monday and thanks to my usual luck with car problems have started already. Last night when I was out driving, I noticed my temp gauge was reading about 110C. As I found a place to pull over it was then reading about 125ish. I pulled over and pretty quickly it had cooled back to 90 again. So off I went as I was far fom home, and all seemed well, until on the way back it did the same again, I was only doing about 70mph, so wasn't caining it or anything. I didn't fancy checking the engine bay as it was pouring down, so I waited let it cool down and on I went again. The weird thing was when I slowed down the car cooled down, and it was fine round town. I checked the coolant level and that is ok. I don't know a great deal about these cars yet, and when I tried it again this morning, it was fine and warmed up normally and then went from 90C t 0C and then back up again, then was ok for a while and then shot off the scale again gradually. I waited a while and within a few minutes it was cool again. Is it likely to be a dodgy sensor, thermostat or water pump?? Unsure and hoping it aint gunna cost me much to sort, as I am skint anough after buying the car. At the moment I am at work, and its a 25 mile drive home, will I be ok to get it home?? Pleeeeeeeease help!!!
Thanks in advance...
Dan. :( :( :(

gut reaction suggests possibly faulty water pump- a known weak point on mk4.
Welcome to forum too.

yup most likely the water oump. the fins are plastic and are prone to break. fix immediately!!!! i think GSF do a metal fin version to avoid the problem again. to work on the water pump, the cambelt will need to be removed, so will give u an change to change this belt aswell at no extra labour costs.

Yeah cheers guys!!! Just been doing some research on this on various sites including here, and it seems to be a very common problem. Will take it very steady on the way home tonight and get it replaced asap. Glad its not something too expensive, especially after just getting it!!! Will do the cam belt at the same time too as I don't think it has been done and is probably due. Thanks again. :)

Was plugged into the diagnostics this morning and came up as a faulty sensor. £10 to replace hehe... well happy!!! Should be sorted now.

I bet it was the dual temp sender - it sends the temp to the guage as well as the ecu. Always going wrong!

Pretty sure thats exactly what it was mate. You got a TT powered Mk2?? :o

sensor most likely if gauge goes down that low.
also fuses for fans on to pof bettery cover are known to corrode and cause them not to work, but when they do cook is when the plastic impellor'd water pump cracks and you loose circulation. They can idel at 90'C but as soon as you drive it rise up rapidly is that symptum

Well today we replaced the water pump, cam belt and also put a new thermostat in which originally didn't cure the problem. However it was the pump and it is now fixed. :D Thanks for the help people. :D
