Noisy Magnex Exhaust - not any more!

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

yo
got a second hand stainless steel magnex system for my mk2 16v from inters this year. fitted it a couple of months ago, and boy is it noisy. i'm sure it wasn't that noisy when i first put it on, but it sure is now. Behind the car on tickover it is quite boomy, and it seems to be worst at about 4k revs, after that it gets quieter again. i've fitted it all properly (it wasn't a good fit anyway!), and it doesn't seem to be touching anywhere.
any ideas, or is that just magnex exhausts?
A:

Thinks its just magnex! I had a magnex back box, it was shocking, poor fit and sounded like a fart, put the o.e one back on, much better.
A:

magnex exhausts are loud and boomy, had one on my last car although it was a full on group n with decat pipe!
A:

Mine's fine? Burbles nicely on tickover, and you can't really hear it from within the car when you're town-driving etc. However, when you plant your foot it's monstrous, but that's kind of the point.
A:

I've got a full system - stainless manifold back - and have no problems with noise..? A little louder than standard but certainly not like most aftermarket exhausts. I wouldn't have kept it if it was - I'm not after that sort of car..! (Mk2 16V btw.)
Just about right in my opinion.

A:

I to have a full Magnex system and it's okay. Not much louder than standard at idle, and howls nicely at higher rpm's.
A:

I've got a Magnex cat back system, and it is too noisy for my taste. It sounds good at idle and up to about 2000rpm , after that it makes quite a hollow, raspy sound.
Trouble is I can't afford to splash out on a new standard one.
A:

I've got a Magnex back box and I wish I had spent the money on a standard one.
My system has the first middle box taken out and the next is a scorpion before the magnex. It sounds awful when it's idling and makes an awful noise just in town driving. I must say it sounds fine when I'm giving it some stick but I can't drive everywhere like that...
A:

I've got a magnex cat back on my mk3 with a de-cat pipe and always liked its character. Quite at idle and light load but lets you know its there under full throttle.
Not sure if removing boxes and mixing systems is a fair comparison of a magnex back box though Daz. Removing any box or the cat can make a big difference to exhaust character and level.

I know it's not the same as having the whole system on the car but I had a Scorpion back box on it before and that sounded just a little bit louder than a standard one.
The biggest reason I can see for it sounding so different is the size of the bore going into the Magnex...it's huge compared to the old Scorpion I took off!
A:

Are you talking about the bore of the inlet to the back box on the magnex or the back box outlet? What kind of size is it? On mine the pipe all the way through is 2 and 1/4 inch.
A:

I'm on about the inlet on the back box. I can't remember what size it was, possibly 2.5inch, but I had to use a reducer to fit it onto the old system (which came with the backbox).
I've seen another Golf with the same back box on round here once and it sounded the same as mine aswell. I just figured it was a thing with the Magnex because it's not just mine.
A:

hi sdj_mk3
it's rick from the patching meet on sunday. i guess u didn't hear me drive off otherwise u'd know what i was talking about!
i don't understand how one magnex can be quiet and another noisy as hell.
no wadding left?
A:

I also have a noisy Magnex system! Really boomy on the motorway. However I believe they have a lifetime warranty........
A:

I know mines not a magnex, but Ive got something called a cobra-sport. Has anyone ever heard of these? I certainly havent.
It has s/s boxes, joined with mild steel pipes. Ive googled it, and it seems they only make back boxes. Mines defo a full system though.
Its silent at anywhere below high revs, and then its literally a screamer. Makes my head ring on the dual carriage way to work! (still though i suppose it wakes me up at 6.30 in the morning)
Only reason i ask is that it seems to be a really poor fit, and its been welded together.... Great!
Beacause its a bad fit it doesnt sit in the centre tunnel where the heatshielding goes.
I think i need to cut about 10mm out an weld it agen.
Anyone ever heard of cobra?
A:

my magnex was to noisey for my taste, i wouldn't say it was sheer volume it just seemed like i'd got the biggest sub in the world in the boot on constant feedback, a very bassy system, swapped it for a jetex much happier, makes a wicked sound when you boot it aswell !!!!
A:

p.s. 5 doors rock !!!! i'll sign up for that revolution.
A:

5-door!!!!
A:

i've got a full magnex system mated to a TSR 4branch.
Nice noise at idle, and good on full song. however if you reach motorway cruising speed arond 4k, the thing booms like a complete *******... not good.
A:

For those interested in getting their 'faulty' exhausts changed here's the dealer page -
Had a look at the warranty details too - "Magnex Exhausts comes with a lifetime guarantee to the original purchaser of the product and purchased in the UK.
You should register your guarantee card within 21 days of purchase of the product. If the guarantee card is not registered within 21 days then the product will have a 12 month manufacturers guarantee. If you are the original purchaser of the product and have purchased outside the UK then the product will have a 12 month manufacturers guarantee."

Rick Didn't realise!! D'oh! Didn't really give it my full attention, too busy trying to dig my sump out of the grass!! Did you go down to the G-Werks gig after? Looks like a few others turned up later that I missed from the pic's I've seen. Spoke to Darren yesterday and he said it was a good day all round.
As for the exwhorest (mhe mhe) I think the cat back systems on mk2's and 3's go a bit boomy around 4k, I'd guess that using just the back box from these systems will give similar effects as the boomy noise is oriffice noise not flow noise so will tend to be controlled by outlet number/shape/size etc (so mainly the back box)
What outlets does everyone have? 2 round 3" inwardly rolled by any chance?
I'll take you out in mine if you like see if that's any better/worse but I dare say its not comparable as I've got no back seats which makes it a bit louder!! (Can show you how the old girl goes on gas too!!)

sweet
where dya see the g-werks pics?
A:

Was in the show reports section...
Or the link direct to the album is...

A:

My system is a twin round inwardly rolled affair but don't think its a 3incher! i reckon 2.5" or even as lowly as 2". Still boomy as hell at the 4K mark.
A:

Yeah I think its the twin round exit systems just boom at 4k.
Hey ho, I guess you pays your money you takes your choice I guess!
Quite like mine on balance and the build quality is pretty good.
