i have just nought a mk2 gti 16v that has been stood for about a month on the way home i noticed the heater was working but when i got in traffic the heater went cold the temp went just between half and 3/4 on the scale so it didnt overheat do you have any ideas on the problem thanks.

Faulty heater valves, thay are on the feed and return pipes going to the heater in the engine bay. They came out as a recall to stop the matrix blowing under too much pressure. They can stick, causing the hot water to recirculate back to the engine rather than to the matrix. 191819911A part number - about 30 pounds from a dealer.

Bin them, 2 wee lengths of 22mm copper pipe fixes it.
