Mk3 8v block with kr 16v head?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hi,
Is the mk3 golf 2.0 8v engine a tall block?
Can I use a kr 16v head on the 8v mk3 block and also can it then take the diesel crank to achieve the magic 2.1 litres?
I want a low compression as I'm fitting a turbo technics kit.
Thanks in advance.

Martin,
I belive the 16v head is designed to work with blocks that have extra oil squiters to feed the extra cam... The 8v block does not provide these and thus
you are probably wasting your time....although the application of the head to the block does lower compression, I don't think you would be getting enough oil fed to the cams, especially given the fact it'll be a high-revving Turbo....
the mk3 engines are tall block, but if you want 16v, you are better starting with a 16v ABF then changing the crank.
check the search function as this question is asked more than frequently!

Hi Alex
Thanks for reply...
I did do a search but it seems not have a definate answer that I can find, is it a grey area?
If it will work and there are no oil supply issues I will do it. 8v mk3 engines are very avaliable and I can't find just a well priced ABF.
Will it work?
Cheers
Martin

if you need more oil in the cyl head then isnt it just a matter of fitting better oil pump ie 16v. also arent the squirters in the block squirting the pistons. im pretty sure i read once that some 8 valves do have these.

Could be true!
I am no authority. I just think given the cost of configuring turbos and what not into an engine setup, you are better off simply buying a fully, tried and tested engine before you begin the turbo trail even if it costs £300 more.
Martin, you are better off waiting till the authorities* come on later this evening for a definitive answer. I may be totally wrong about the oil squirters feeding the extra cam and yes, the 16v blocks do have squirters for the pistons, so maybe it's here that I'm getting confused.
anyway, we shall have to wait and see.......
I take it you want the tall block application to enable you to use a certain crank?
I'm sure this has been done on the short block 2litre motors- and obviosuly these are far more common and much cheaper!
A:

Hi,
Absolutely yes, I'd want the squirters to cool the pistons with a turbo engine. If the mk3 8v block dosent have the squirters mayne they can be retro fitted into it?
Yes I want tall block so I can use the longer stroke diesel crank and rods.
Will it work?? Hotgolf will know i'm sure!
Cheers

2E engines have oil squirters and yes thye can work with a KR head and cams. You may need to grind the valve pockets in for the inlet valves as a saftey measure. One problem you may have is blanking the dizzy hole as it will now be on the head you will need to run the 16v jockey shaft and wider 16v drive wheels and a very expense oil pump drive gear with an ally cover, seal and clamp. This will allow you to run the 16v oil pump. This why you may want to consider just getting a whole engine either a 9A or an ABF

Hmmm,
Well I had a search and learnt that 'apparently' most of the mk3 2.0 8v blocks have oil squirters :)
So i'm going to buy the following..
A complete 2.0 8v mk3 engine (no idea wot engine code as seller can't identify one, and I assume they are all the same and it dosent matter)
A KR 16v head for rebuilding
A diesel crank 95.5mm (if I can find one)
KR intermediate shaft and pulley's (for 16v cambelt)
KR oil pump
That should allow me to build up a bottom end of 2042cc and hopfully give me a lowish compression ratio using the 8v dished pistons.
I couldn't find out if the diesel crank will work in this application (I'm assuming it will as its a mk3 diesel item) and I'm only assuming the rod ratio will work with the diesel crank to give me 2042cc as all mk3 blocks are tall blocks.
Wish me luck! EEEEEk

i have a 2e bottom end if your interested? i also have a kr head, KR intermediate shaft and pulley's pm me if your interested

You need a 9A or other 2l 16v intermediate shaft.
