Rolling Road session i suppose must be there somewhere

onthe abf... getting the vacs and fuel pressure reg sorted.
decat was good too, but they all make small gains that have added up to a monumental gain.
Just out of curiosity Matt, what exactly are these mods? Where would i need to go to get this done?
Cheers
when i got the car, the vac hoses looked ok. i took them off just to check and they crumbled in my hands. before that it was running rich (to the tune of 24mpg, 240miles per tank lol)
i brought new vac hoses (to the ecu, to the fuel pressure reg, any other ones too). i also got some fuel line clips (like tiny jubilees) to secure the vac hoses. that gave me a lot of my throttle response back.
as for the fuel pressure regulator, it still wasnt perfect. i took it off and put some wd40 in there and it made a world of difference but when putting it back, one of the rubber rings split, so a brought anew one. ECP sells pierberg items, £30.
i now get 300miles a tank and now that it regulates the pressure properly, i dont get knocking between 2-3k rpms. overall its quicker.
another one to make sure of is the earth wire between the coil and the rocker cover. mine broke. when fixed (with some 4 guage in-car amp earth wire) it ran nicer too.
just maintenance stuff really, but has all made a lovely difference.

my best performance mod per £££ on my MK3 Golf GTI 8v was selling it and buying a fast car in the first place. True story.
WOW so you have a time machine!? lucky
A:

So it's not just me that it annoys when people who don't/no longer have a VW come onto a VW forum and take the p*ss out of what are alot of peoples pride and joy.
A:
injector seals. shell v-max + octain booster and a visit to vince at stealth
A:
mk5 golf gti revo software upgrade cost around £550 but gave me around 260 bhp with my milltek and filter
A:
Surprised no one has mentioned the WUR mod that Stealth do, I have no experience of it but I hear it can releash quite a few more ponies on a Mk2 16V, not sure for other models.
A:
Are we talkin off the shelf available performance mods or just any personal experience ?

Anything i would think mate.

In that case...
Full race 8v head (with a full set of bent valves !) and steel race buckets, 3x cams (used road/rally, new unused race & used hotrod), vernier pulley, forged Cosworth pistons (with "dents" in the top from a blow-up !) on Steel H-section rods (one slightly bent) with Cosworth V-spec rod bolts, all for..... 150 quid !
There was'nt a faster car between Plymouth and Gloucester than my Cavalier that day !!!
Or when i went back a few months later to pick up the 48 Webers when his friend returned them... I think i was robbed @ 50 quid for the pair !
All salvaged and working fine, whirring around in my 8v !

Bargain!
Any bits left you don't need?
A:
Err.. No !

DOH!
A:
Unless you want the old rwd hot rod exhaust manifold that also came with the bits... though you'll need a "big" hole in the drivers side wing to pass it through !

Hmmm, retro stylee
Nah, can't be assed with another styling remodel tbh, but cheers anywho

My best mod is probably the Blitzchip. Not a massive difference in power, but the engine now holds it's power for longer. I did have a de-cat which made a difference, but made my exhaust sound pony so I took it off.

Planning on trying a blitzchip myself
My decat pipe makes my exhaust sound like it's pluffing tbh, but only from inside the car, it sounds wicked from outside
A:
oh a few more very good mods were
fitting a oil cooler to my mk1 and fitting a filter king
A:
285 combi's with uprated servo/mc on the mk1.

Compared to a MK3 8v, it might as well be a time machine!
So it's not just me that it annoys when people who don't/no longer have a VW come onto a VW forum and take the p*ss out of what are alot of peoples pride and joy.
Trust me, there's enough people on this forum that know the limits of a MK3 8v engine, I don't add anything else to the discussion that hasn't already been said. I'm not taking the p1ss when I say there's no point spending any money tuning that engine, I'm just giving my opinion and trying to save people wasting their cash. If it makes you feel better, go and buy a K&N, a SS exhaust, and get it remapped (if anyone will do this any more). After spending £1k it won't give hardly any performance improvement to that lump, and any gains you do see IMO arent worth the cash you just spent. Spend £400 on a suspension kit, or £300 on a big brake upgrade (say 288mm or 312mm) which will give much more tangible benefits that just making more noise.
I had a MK3 8v for 3 years, I enjoyed the car for what it is and it was my pride and joy. I just wasn't under the illusion that there was any point spending money tuning the engine. Better to spend your cash on handling/brakes or styling if you want to mod the car, thats what I'm saying.
A:
decent set of springs with koni t/a and poly bushes all round.
koni inserts 2nd hand but unused of Fleabay for £60!

And what you say this time and the way you've said it is spot on. I will not be spending any money tuning my engine because as you say, the £ per bhp return is slight. I will however be tuning the engine with a £40 blitzchip (which i may even read with my eprom writer ) I'll be doing my own flowed head (Done heads for most of my cars and a lot of my mates cars in the last ten years) and possibly fitting a cam (a mate has a few of the things kicking about). Most of the tuning i am doing will improve fuel economy, mid range power and possible give me 10-15bhp at the top (If I'm lucky) I will however be spending more on the chassis, it has new brakes all round already and they are up to the job, new bushes all round which has mad a heck of a difference to the handling, and coilovers are next.
What you say about trying to prevent people spending money on the lump is true, there is little point unless you're going to spend BIG money, for which you could buy a 16v
A:
& then still spend loads on it.......
A:
cool, I can see how it looked in my first post - as being 8v bashing, so good to clear it up.
£40 for a chip sounds like good value, I remember that the only place I could get a remap done was AMD for like £600 back in the day, where's that £40 chip from?
