A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Perhaps that should be a question, not a statement...
Hello Gents,
Last year I was running my 1.6TD mk2 back from Birmingham Airport when all at once it spat out a glowplug and a coolant pipe split.
In a split second the engine lost compression and overheated.
Marooned on the A46 and only about 5 miles from home, I decided that the car (only bought for £250 as a short term measure) had served me well and come what may, one final ride of glory would be made before it's retirement.
And so it went. 30-40mph down the A46 to Evesham and Left to Badsey.
Never before have I truly shagged a volkswagen, but this was the proper job, inpromptu and with no lube.
Running an aircooled Diesel is not to be tried. The needle actually disappeared as the temperature soared and the smoke it was kicking out was horrendous.- People coming up behind me, overtaking and beeping their horns as if i hadn't noticed! Anyway, I got home in a cloud of smoke which has probably given cancer to half the population enroute.
The car itself is superb and if i can get a 1.6D engine for peanuts, I'm very tempted to stick it in the Golf! So...
For a bit of fun I thought I'd swap the diesel pumps and manifolds to the N/A diesel and see how long it'll last as a turbo.
My question though, is not, 'will it be compatible?', but, will all that heat have destroyed the turbo?
What a story....
Alex

Hows it going. The temperature would be less likely to damage the turbo that a lack of oil. Anyway those old turbos are readily available. The fundamentle difference between the turbo and non block is that the turbo has oil sprayers at the bottom of the cylinder which help cooling. The piston has in turn a small recess in the bottom side of it also. I'm not 100% about the head difference but i'd say the valves are also different. Will it work??? I'd say almost definately but an oil cooler would probably be a big help. They are a super engine. I have one that smokes 90bhp pug td's in my mk2 gtd. Check out for performance mods. Pump and turbo upgrades along with sprinter intercooler
A:
shane,
awesome dude.
YEah, the engines are bombproof! What I was thinking was grabbing a N/a 1.6 for peanuts and then using everything off my wrecked engine, ie.manifolds, sump, cooling etc. Even if it lasts 6 months it'll be worth the fun! (yeah, the Turbo heads have sodium in the valves to help in extreme heat apparently!) Anyway, I'm not too fussed as i love the fact the car is so damn useable! I even used it (when it worked) to tow my dad's works transit out of a soft field. gotta love it! If the turbo is in good nick, then I'm game!
Cheers for your info dude!

Not exactly a worthwhile brag tbh, my 90bhp 406 TD is as slow as sh*te, it only comes alive(ish) when it comes on boost at 3krpm and even then it's far from rapid, maxing out at 112mph @ 4400rpm on alevel and 117mph down a fair old hill, on private roads of course
Mind you, my injectors are fairly pooped tbh, the car could smoke for scotland
A:
wasnt the 406 the slowest car on the road (new production cars) at one point? I remember reading a copy of whatcar and ****ing about finding the slowest 0-60 time... 27 seconds or something... a 1.9 n/a pug estate.... what a car....

They never made a N/A 406 diesel. The turbo model was already slow enough. Mine hits 60 in a shave over 15 secs (at a guess), listed time is 13.2 i think, but like i say, ferked injectors, the cars almost dead below 2700rpm, lol. The bolloxed it up by fitting the same gearbox to the 1.9TD as they did to the 2litre petrol, which revs over 2000rpm higher and the ratios are just ALL f*cked up for a diesel, 4400rpm, change gear and................it's off boost and going nowhere at 2500rpm 3000rpm, off it goes again, 4400rpm, change gear, and it's off boost.............
It's like driving a 2 stroke car tbh.
A:
nice.... perhaps i read 17 seconds then? It's all that love i have for peugeots.... sorry what??
I'll leave you to your 2 stroke...and questionning your decision to buy French in the first place...

and questionning your decision to buy French in the first place...
I was young and had just had a baby (well she had, i just watched)
A:
Well a 24 year old design engine with a humble 1588cc able to smoke td pugs in quite impressive in my opinion.

The pug TD design is even older
A:
When was the first 1.9 turbo diesel pug then???
A:
I once drove my dad's Pug 405 diesel estate non-turbo, damm thing still gives me nightmares. The thing had 180K miles on it and I drove from Bristol to Birmingham and back, the whole trip the fastest I got out of it was 60mph. I'd never been out accelerated by a 40 ton truck before and realised even if i floored it I still would'nt catch up.

No idea, but it's the same as the non TD pug engine which has been around since the early 70s. I can't go into any detail about them tbh, cos i'm a dub man NOT a pug man.

YES! AND YOU'D BE RUN OUTTA THIS TOWN
but seriously... top 60mph? were you hauling half of the county? Was it the 405 that was the old-skool square type that looked like it was designed by a cubist?
A:
nah, i was thinking 504... sorry!
A:
Those old pugs are cool as feck.......
They'd almost make you forgive the French.
A:
Almost.....It's old peugeot porn....
