Advice for a KR 16v

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Dear Drivers
Wish to seek all of your opinions on how to better/improve my current Mk2 16v set up. What I have now is;
P&P Head
Balanced Piston
272 degree cams (Inlet and Exhaust)
Custom equal length made 4-2-1 exhaust
My idel is hairy which draws attention when at stand still. Here I am not complaining. However the car feels sluggish. I have another friend with a similiar set up except for the cams which are 268 in a Mk1 body. Be it stand still or rolling test he still leaves me for dead. I have check my timing and installation of the cams and they are correct. Please can anyone offer me some advice? How can I better the performance/responce? What else can I do? My goal is 180bhp so am I going on the right rack?
A:

2 litre block would be a good starting point.

A:

Dave .... I have check and read some of the threads you highlighted. There are some conditions linked to the changing of engine block in my country. The paper work, inspection and so on and so forth ... however I appreciate your comment.
Anyone else has other suggestions. thanks.

carbs?

what about throttle bodies? theres a couple of people on here who have gone down this route using (i think) bike throttle bodies and megasquirt ecu. it's pretty cheap aswell! I'm currently putting this set up on a f**d duratec engine and i'm hoping for about 210-220 on a standard engine. The whole set up, ecu, throttle bodies, manifold, sensors etc. all came to about £800! Consider that Emerald charge £1550 for the same but without a manifold or injectors you can see it ain't bad!
A:

Could you try and reduce the weight of the car perhaps? The reason your friends Mk1 is quicker will most likely be due to the car weighing less.
It sounds like you already have a good engine setup and aside from a capacity increase or change of the fuelling system (assume you are running standard k-jet?) I don't think you'll get that much more power from a 1800cc engine.
A:

Markone2L16v - Please eleborate on your system.. From what i know ITB is not cheap.
Stu - My friends Mk 1 is a cabrio so it should be as heavy as the Mk2. Yes I am still maintaining K-Jet. Have you any suggestion on the engine management?
I lot of ppl in the US have gone turbo even with the K-Jet system. Its much cheaper compared to the ITB and can harvest more power. This is a route I have been toying for a long time but maintaing NA would still be priority.
Dubbers any more suggestions?

Any more comments Bump...?
On the same topic, Has anyone fitted a 2.0L crank into a 1.8L block?
A:

Hello there,
It is possible to fit a longer stroke crank to the KR block and combined with larger pistons a 2.0 or 2.1 litre engine is possible. One way of doing it is to source a diesel crank, but I dont know the finer details such as what model VW these come from. Try a search for "diesel crank" and see what comes up.
A:

yeah, bore and stroke the old KR block using 2L crank and pistons and no-one will tell it's a 2L from the outside, would have to strip and measure bores and crank to prove what capacity it was
A:

Thanks guys.... has anyone preform such a conversion here? Would be nice if I know what i should be looking for. Again many thank for those who chimed in.

just fit 6A/9A internals to a KR block (pistons, rods, crank), the block will need to be bored out to suit the 2L pistons and a small amount of machining to get the crank to clear inside the block, there's hundreds of these conversions been done and providing the re-boring is done properly they're perfectly reliable, usually a 2L oil pump is fitted too.
I had a KR bored to 2L before my current engine, it's not often done these days as it's more cost effective to re-con an original 2L block.
A:

I would bother boring the kr lump, best to get a recon 9a/6a lump from vw, or speak to someone like ivor seal (engine builders) which come highly recomended, this is what i plan to do over the winter to my kr lump.
A:

guys thanks again .... the reason why I want to still maintain my KR block is mainly due to the conditions set by the local vehicle registration. I am not from the UK so if anyone has detail on where i should modify the block to clear the 2L crank is much appreciated.
Again cheers

I've got a junked bored old TSR KR 2L block in the back of my garage, will take some pics when I get time.
David.

Dear Guys.... bumping this thread to see if anyone has installed a 2L crank into a 1.8L KR block.... thank you.
A:

Before you start with major surgery, has your car been properly set up on a rolling road? With that spec you'll need to Warm Up Regulator modifying to richen the mixture, or it'll run very lean at high revs, which is where you'll be with those cams.
Other than that, change the block and don't tell anyone...it's bloomin hard to see anyway, especially with a little bit of abrasion / acid / rust
Which country are you in, anyway?

There's a bloomin great 2.0 cast on the back of my 2L block

LOL, I am from Malaysia. The Road Transport Dept is tight. I have to agre with David as the 2.0 is un mistakable....
Mike about the WUR which do u suggest I upgarde to. Will changing the injectors be better? Your comments appreciated.
A:

Yeah, but it's on the back, so partly hidden anyway. You could grind it off and paint it over.
The WUR mod isn't an upgrade, it's a modification to the existing one. See the engines FAQ's for the adjustment procedure.
A:

mikehorbs - thanks have looked up the threads and will see what can be done. Anyone on here has preform this before? your advce most appreciated.
davidwort - still waiting for you to come back on the 2L crank into a 1.8L block mod...
