what things click in the engine of a mk2 8V!

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Was given a lift in my mates 8V mk2, and he gets a clicky noise, even when the car is going straight! Its not the tappets as he changed them abit ago, and i dont think its the CV joints as ive these twice before and they sound different. happens throughout the speed range, mainly when going abit faster tho, say 25-30 odd?
On a side note, he gets damp patches in the drivers foot well, well inbetween the pedal area and the front of the seat. Possible causes?
thanks in advance
Dave

Small end bearings can 'ping' if worn. Cam Tensioner can rattle if it's getting on a bit? Does the noise vary in line with engine speed?
A:

it just comes on randomly? I can have a better listen to it sometime, was only in it for 10 minutes. What do you mean by small end bearings?
A:

Alrite youth,

The cause of the damp patches is a hole in the floor pan dave as far as i know, i suffer from the same problem! hope he gets it sorted! Dave
A:

if it coming from inside the car it could be the speedo cable behind the clocks. whack some grease in, that should sort it if it is the problem.
A:

or possibly where the steering column goes through the bulkhead, best way to find a water leak is get the hosepipe out.
As for the clicking, make sure he hasnt left his watch under there (sorry its no use!)

The cause of the damp or wet patches on driver side foot well comes from the rubber grommet that seals the bonnet pull cable from the rain run off under the rain tray. Put some silicone and it should be fine.
Clicking... Does this increase with engine revs or with speed?
A:

small update, the clicking will happen when stationary, when you rev it sometimes!
A:

injectors
tappets
spark plugs
tensioner
belts
alternator
waterpump
Should give you a few things to try
Use a long screwdriver as a stethescope to try to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from

mr johhny rubber, thanks

Get the plastic tray off which sits under the bonnet below the windscreen, clean it nicely so water will flow off it properly and not settle, and get rid of any leaves and dirt that have settled under the left and right corners of the tray.
