A&Q about 350Z
Q:
hi i need some advice for months now my mk3 golf 2ltr has been pullin back when excellerating in 1st and 2nd gear also when doing high speeds u can feel it trying to pull! now its got to the point where if i dont start it regually (every 12 hrs ish) it takes ages to start! i have even had to jump on the bottom door frame to get it started!! i have took it to a garage he said its the fuel pump! but a mate said his not sure about that so i have took it to another garage but now the car is starting occasionally but losing revs straight away and dieing but it does sometimes hold it! dont matter weather it hot or cold the other machanic said its the injectors and not the fuel pump as the fuel pump would just go and not do what its doing! i have now been told by the original garage that injectors dont go in petrol cars well not as a rule and it could be the pressure valve leading to one injector but he is dead set on it being the pump obviously i could just change everything but im not rich! could anyone give me advice on what the problem could be? i should be putting it on a dianostic machine to see if its the injectors but if its not im back to square one!!
any advice would be gratefully recieved
micky

eh??!
What engine is this?
Think the ECU temp sender is hi on the list for problems with cold starting.
Also when my lambda probe wiring gave up the car would stall and rev all over the place.
Mine also ran very rich. Does yours do this?
Combined with a blocked up fuel filter the car didnt run very well at all and lacked power etc.
Also vacuum leaks from split hose's will cause you no end of trouble.
Theres a load of reasons why your car might no be 100% so its hard to say "its this" as its not that easy fault finding in this manner (on a forum).
Theres a lot you can do yourself that will only cost you your time.
Including:- Check ignition system, plugs HT, leads, distributor, coil connections. Also check your earths are clean and tight..
Check all the engine sensor connections.
Check the injector connection(s)
Check the ECU, X relief, fuel pump relays.
Check all your vacuum lines and hose's.
Clean your throttle body out with carb cleaner and the connected hose's.
Ive got a 2E engine. Theres a line that goes from a purge valve on the drivers wing to underneath the throttle body. Mine was perished on the elbow. Easily missed..
If your garage thinks its fuel related, check the fuel filter, £10 from VAG + 20mins of time.
Also check electrical connection to the pump.. (dont forget the relay!)
Only a fuel pressure check on the system will prove the pump or other to be at fault.
Is the pump noisy? Does it prime when you turn on the ignition (should hear a whirring and stop after about a second or so) A high pitched noise means somethings blocked or it on its way out.
When was the last time the car was serviced? You might have a few problems combined (as i have had...)
If you could get it checked for error codes that would give you some direction to go in.
Also ive just gone back to 98fuel. The differance is amazing, though i doubt this is a reason for your issues..
Also maybe run some injector cleaner through the system.

Injectors tend to fail very gradually, you would have worse and worse running before it failed (due to injectors). It could be the fuel pump, or a blocked filter. Go to a garage who can do a fuel pressure test, it will be worth running this test as it will give a certain diagnosis before replacing the fuel pump and/or other parts.

Hi
A cheap thing to try is the fuel pump relay. Swap one from a mate's car and try.

thank u all for your help ill give them a try!!!

The two problems may not be related. Problems starting from cold could be a sensor that needs replacing and the lack of revs could be something to do with the Throttle Position Sensor. Look at the throttle body, if you pull the cable you should hear a click, there is a small microswitch there, just wondering if its stuck?

What age is the car? Is it an 8valve or a 16v? How many miles has it done?
If it's the fuel pump or relay, turn on the ignition to the No2 position, where the ignition lights come on but the starter doesn't turn the engine. You should hear a smooth hum from the fuel pump when you do this, which normally stops after about 3 seconds. If the fuel pump is knacked it might run on and on, sounding like it's stuttering a bit.
It's not all that common for injectors to fail, but anything's possible.
Also, where do you live? Someone should be able to recommend a good VW specialist in your area, but NOT a dealer unless you've got loads of money to waste.
PS the guy at the 2nd garage you spoke to is a definite muppet. Jury's still out on the first one.
