If it's too big a lump for a MK3 it's going to kill my MK2
Don't listen to them, mk3 Vr's are great, too many people talk cack tbh
A:
VR6 is more expensive to run, worth bearing in mind.
A:
what alot mor than the 16v
A:
Apparently so - I was going to get a mk3 golf VR6 but everyone warned me off it because they're very thirsty.
A:
get a mk2 vr6 hehe thatll fly!!

I believe they'll happily produce MPG figures of 28-32 on normal runs, so hardly a noticeable drink problem! Should imagine that drops considerably when you boot it mind.
If fuel's a serious consideration then buy a 1litre polo.
Plenty of VR's being broken at breakers yards too, so no shortage of cheap parts.
A:
I was in the same situation, VR6 or 16v, I went for the 16v in the end.. although a VR would have been nice I was put off by the warnings of ragged engines, 24 average mpg's but then again, you don't buy a VR6 and worry about the fuel you're using.. it's meant to be a fun car, plus whack a turbo or supercharger on it and you will fly faster!
Still love my 16v though!
A:
think im gonna go with a vr6 but i cant find a decent one its doing my head in
A:
Yeah the thing is you don't buy a VR6 to drive like a granny!!
A:
VR6 all the way!!!!!
Don't listen to all the horror stories, as most are very rare accurences. I've had nearly 2 years trouble free motoring and I use it every day to and from work and at playtime as well!!!!
As for petrol, all cars use petrol get used to it. As someone said if thats the main reason for buying a car the get a 1l Lupo or a push bike for god sakes.
Get the VR as you will drive the 16v thinking "I should of got the VR6...oh well this will have to do now!!!!!"
I'm kinda biased as I own one, but everyone who has owned one says it was the best car they have driven whether its a corrado or golf.
JUST DO IT MAN!!!!!!!!

I've been moaned at for airing my views and experiences of VR6s but after wanting one for a longtime after a friend had one from new, once I found a nice one but then didn't keep it long.
Thirtsy - yes they can do 30mpg at 70mph but its REALLY painful to achieve it. Drive it the way you want to enjoy a car and you won't see more than 24mpg. Worse if you really want to enjoy it!
They are rather lazy and lacklustre below 3,600 rpm almost to the point of being gutless. Great above 4,000rpm, addictive even but now you are back to crippling fuel consumption and lots of speeding tickets. The cars I drove just didn't really do it below 100mph so I ended going every where at 120mph and thats big commitment!
And get a quote for having the cam chains replaced from someone experienced to understand what these cars can really cost. There are plenty still running well after 100K miles with the original chains but equally there are plenty that havn't. To be safe they need doing at 100K miles
But then I'm old and boring and have just bought a TDi! (along with my beloved Kjet Mk1 & 2 of course!)
A:
i think i am gotta find one first i want a black one really but the hard to find in a 3 door
A:
cam chain at vw dealer is 840.00 fitted
already thought about that but vw enginer said they should be good till 200k at least
A:
Dont goto a dealership. Plenty of VW specialists out there with vast VR6 experience. Thats if they ever needed doing anyway.
A:
I V FOUND ONE mauve 3door 1993 fsh 93k 10 months mot 4 months tax sounds mint and only 20 miles away from me 1700.00 ono just spoke to the bloke sounds mint no rips or rust completly standard with a full closure alarm going to see it tomorrow, anything to look for ??
A:
hopefully get it for 13-14 hundred if its any good only thing im not sure on on the 93 model is the interia its a bit blue but 200 bhp wah ha
cant weight
A:
That sounds like a bargain if it's everything the guy says it is!
If I was to get a VR6 it'd be a Corrado, the mk3 shape doesn't do anything for me, and 'rados are THE SEX.
A:
yer but two insurance groups higher, more bucks, theres somthing about corrados i dont like think its the **** end , but when do i see that when im driving
A:
Here is my input -
If looking for a VR go for a later one - I got a late 97 HL, and it felt the most powerful of all the ones I test drove.
Power delivery does differ between cars - I posted a while back about some not pulling down low as much as i expected.
The one I have now does - it will pull from 1000rpm in 3rd. Not like it does at 4000 - but a damn site more than a valver.
The question of expense - the only real consideration is the petrol.
Get a laptop and VagCom. As long as you can get diagnostics you will be fine.
If the engine itself is in good condition it requires very little maintenance on a regular basis - its more a case of checking that everything is still working as it should be, like the secondary water pump, etc.
Have you found one yet?
A:
just got one paid 1500 for it 3 door mauve good condition couple of litte bits but nothing engine wise engine is imackulate full history 96k on the clock on a 93 L plate well looked after car

I know what you mean about the 3.5k thing but if you invest in a Schrick or VSR then it shifts the power band down and it starts to really pull from the off, but is noticable from about 1500 to 2000 rpm. Best thing i've bought for mine so far. Well worth the £800 I paid for it.
And why do people go on about the chains. They will be fine its the tensioners that MAY need replacing. If its a later car then it will have better chains and better tensioners. Only way to deffinately tell they need doing is to whip the gearbox of and strip the covers off and have a look
A:
i was asking myself the same thing before i got my 16v.
performance wise it is not far from a vr6, but obviously the vr6 should be able to tune far higher. the vr6 also sounds like god.
thing is, i have been to bham this weekend (from southend). on the way there, with a lot of traffic, it averaged about 38mpg, then i used it in the city, that went down to just over 36mpg (confirmed when i filled it this morning)
on the way back, i averaged just under 40mpg and did not take it easy at all. i doubt a vr6 could do that in a month of sundays.
my 16v will consistently get over 300 miles a tank and i use it hard. can you justify vr6 fuel consumption?
oh... and my 16v has done 154k miles and makes over 170bhp according to Stealth
A:
The amount of petrol your car is going to drink depends on your driving style tbh. If your a thrasher, and do alot of town driving then the return is never going to make pretty reading on either a 16v or VR6. The VR6 will drink more than the 16v, but it will go better.
Swings and roundabouts.
Now a mk2 VR6 conversion.... thats what its all about, which reminds me to go check if funkbaron has got his car moving this weekend!!!!
A:
My 2.8 golf will happily do 28-30 mpg on the open road. When i give it the toe, it'll roll home with about 22mpg. The problem with the vr6 is it hates traffic. You can drive like Tiff needell and you'll struggle to get figures like 11-16 mpg when your not even fuggin moving, but if you dont mind getting around 300 miles a tank....
