A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Hi Iv got a problem with the engine in my 89mk2 GTI the other week i was coming back from a friends house and was traveling down the duel carrage way at aprox 65 70 mph, when my engine started knocking and banging, thinking it was the cam right away i started to pull over, and noticed that when my foot was off the accelerator pedel the noise stoped and engine sounded normal again, so started to pick speed up, but as soon as i puit my foot on the pedal the knocking and banging starts,
on thursday i took the car to my local garage to see if they could tell me what is wrong with the car, and when i picke d her up on friday, the man told me that i had cracked a piston, and it wasnt realy worth fixing on a car on this age witch totaly gutted me as the car is mint apart from the engine,
so i started thinking about the 2.0 16v root and started striping the front of my car down and stripping the engine. first i took the head off as i was planing on using the head or cams from it as it is a complete recon with less than 9000 miles on it,
When i removed the head from the block i noticed that my head gasket had blow between cylinders 3&4 number 4 being cylinder closest to flywheel, (prob got that all back to front)
and on closer inspection of the pistons i found that all were fine if a little coked up
but im now hoping after seeing that the head gasket had blown between cylinders that this could be the cause of the noises, or is there any thing els that could of gone like maybe crank bearings or somthing,
thanks for reading i hope somebody can answer me soon cheers

engines are easier replace than cars at least! (sorry, that doesnt help, but still)

have you tried the car out of gear ,could've been a box problem (maybe not ,but from what you describe ),cambelt tensioner is another option, replace the rings and shells in the car while your in among the engine anyways ,replace the head gasket, and you'll be able to see when you've got the engine in bits what's wrong with it if it is in the engine

Hi, I'm not a mechanic but when my head gasket went the engine made a loud knocking noise coming from the head and blew a load of smoke out of the exhaust. It was at the track so had it looked at by a trackside mechanic, the initial diagnoses being cam/valve problems.
When Dubsport stripped the top of the engine the head gasket had gone due to a small amount of corrosion in a waterway, cam/valves OK. The head was welded, skimmed and re-built - 2000K miles later everything still working fine.

Sounds like it could be the head gasket, although a blown piston would have some similar symptoms. Worth getting the head ported and skimmed while it's off, if you can afford it.
Overall, if the body of the car is right, then it's worth spending money on it... mechanical bits are a lot easier.
2.0 16v is a good engine conversion on a 1.8 16v, if you can find a good donor engine (some of them are getting a bit old and might have had a hard life).

Thanks for the replys folks, iv been looking for 2.0 ltr engines on ebay and some other companys but they asking for 500+ for them. (more than i paid for the car) saying that she is in realy good nick appart from the rear hatch where there is a little tiny speck of rust, and the sun room has faded a little, but appart from that shes a good un
im just trying to work out if it is worth doing back up, and what sort of figures would we be looking at, what she would be worth with a 2.0 engine in her,
if any body is interested i MIGHT break her for parts, unless any body has a nice 2.0 that they would like to sell
every thing is available appart from the drivers seat as it has a rip in the usual place, but every thing els is mint and with these nearly new parts
recon KR head less than 9000
new clocks 100 miles less than head mfa stoped working so brought new clocks from audi
correct 160 mph with less than 9000 on the clock
50mm inlet manifold, top and bottom sections with accelerator body
2 year old fuel disributor (mint)
all new steal brain fuel lines
recon gearbox less than 20,000
will only break if i get enuf interest and if i cant get a engine for her this week, as i might buy a g60
A:
i'll take the brain (i guess u mean braided) fuel lines off you m8 if you decide to break it
A:
hehe yup thats right braided brains
cool man if i get enuf interest then ill let ya know
will take offers on whole car as it is really to good to be breaking
but it might come to it
A:
fair enough m8, but stick a new head gasket on there first and try it, see if that noise goes away, after all, they aint much money, and not a really difficult job either.
A:
If the only rust is on the tailgate then it doesn't sound bad...worth sticking with it and sorting the engine.
Post us some pics

Thanks for the replys. I think im going to try a new head gasket and check the crank bearings , and take action there if needed.
will try and get some pics but shes in a bit of a tight position, next to a 66 splitty resto and then blocking those 2 in is also a fully retored 70 cal look bug with out starter motor
(guess it just wasnt my month)
