just went to unlock the boot on my 1988 golf gti mk2, and the key just turns in the lock :( its not locking or unlocking just freely twisting the key slot around! uhoh!!hahaha. luckily the boot is locked!
was wondering if anyone has already had this problem?? and is there anyway of fixing it? or opening the boot from the inside??

if you get into the boot from the inside you can prise the lock away from the boot catch by using a flat head screwdriver.
there may be a connecting rod hanging off the lock which unlocks it.

do u think it will be quite obvieous what is wrong with the locking mech?? like a bit hanging off or something??lol.

Dont need to prise anything, just grab the metal rod running from the button down to the lock, and pull it upwards, this will pop the boot.
1st thing to try is spraying a ton of WD into it and wiggling the key about, if that don't help you'll need to strip it down.
Then pop the rod off the button, and if its central locking undo the screws holding the vac pump and twist it to release the long rod. Look either side of the button and you'll see the 2 clips that hold it in. Push those in whilst pushing on the button it will pop out, then you can pull the assembly out of the car.
If its non-central locking, the lock is held in with a large circlip, pop this off the back and the lock will slide out of the button. If its central locking the rear mech is held on with a screw, undo this and remove, there is a small ball bearing & a spring inside, try not to loose this.
With the lock out, gently push out all the lock fingers, being carefull to place them down somewhere clean in the order they came out, along with the springs. Give it a good soak to clean out all the gunk, then clean the springs & fingers & reassemble. Refitting is the reverse of removal as always
Spray a little silicone lube or something on the lock, there is special lock grease you can get too.
