how long before your gti warms up

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hi, as the title says how long does it take for your gti`s to warm up? I have changed the water pump, radiator and stat and it now seems to take ages to get the neddle to the middle possiton. I do a 10mile jurney down a motorway and the neddle just about gets to the middle just before i stop.
If i open the bonnet all the pipes apart from the bottom hose are nice and warm, maybe my old rad and pump where not that effiecent.
A:

mine takes about 3miles of a road driving to get to about 1/3 on the guage. remember your motorway driving so will be driving at a constant high speed which will give it more airflow than say town driving
A:

I'd watch the oil temp (on MFA) rather than the water temp gauge to see when the car is warmed up properly. The water temp on mine very rarely gets anywhere near half way even in the summer sat in traffic, whereas the oil gets up to a good temp (90 degrees ish) within about 5 mins or normal driving.
As above, on the motorway with a lot of air coming into the rad the car will take longer to warm up.
A:

my mfa hits 50 deg after about 2-3 miles being driven at 30-40 mph
A:

About 5 minutes of below 3000rpm driving before the oil is upto 80ºC.
A:

takes me about 8 mins of driving before the temp guage gets into the 'fun zone'
A:

Use this stuff - it does actually work!
A:

3mins until 50oC, 6-8mins until 80oC+.
A:

cheers for the help guys, the only problem i have is my mfa isnt working at the min ( have mk3 clocks to put in soon )
Do you think i could put some cardboard in front of the radiator to help my car warm up quicker?
A:

Don't know but it took ****ing ages on way home as it was bloody cold
A:

Are you sure the thermostat is working properly? Installed correctly? You really shouldn't have to watch the coolant temp that closely. Certainly not to need cardboard baffle.
The big issue is keeping the oil temp (the engine itself) at an optimal temperature. If that's not quickly stabilizing where it should be, your cooling system needs a close look.
Cheers,
Alan
A:

i always wait till 80 oil temp on MFA before i consider it warmed up.
but then my water temp gauge dont work so cant really use that!!!
A:

Comparing the coolant temp needle with the MFA, when the needle first moves the MFA reads 50oC (min value) when the needle first gets to 85-90 the MFA still only reads around 70oC, this takes less than 5mins.
A:

my 1988 gti valver takes about 5 or 6 mins to get to about quater on the temp gauge, but its the oil temp i always keep check of. well that was until the trip computer thingy decided it dint want to work anymore!!
little things like that just give the car more personality!ahaha
A:

I'm almost certain that the extra air-flow at motorway speed will not cause the car to warm up slower. When the water is cold, the thermostat should stay closed. The amount of air passing the rad will make no difference.
A:

My car warms up a lot quicker at dual carriageway speeds than town driving thats for sure.
