steering column bush

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

evening
still have same problem with steering column movement.
its a 92 gti.
where exactly is the steering column bush? is it a little black rubber thing that you slip over the top of the steering column before you force the locking washer back on.
i'm hoping when i refit the lower steering column bearing, movement will subside, is this a simple job? or is it fiddly?
A:

Have you made sure the allen bolt which holds the steering lock assembly to the steering column outer tube is tight??
A:

i have tightened everything time and time again, thing is the car failed it's mot cos of the up and down movement of the steering wheel.
i am such an expert at removing the steering column that i can remove all wiring, bits and pieces in minutes now.
A:

The upper bearing is pressed into the bearing housing. The bearing housing is the part that also contains the ignition switch and barrel. A complete new housing must be obtained (VAG ones are obviously good, GSF ones are dodgy from personal experience). Your ignition barrel is removed from the old housing by drilling a small hole in a certain place and inserting a pointed object.
A:

i dnt think the ignition barrel bearing is the problem ( i may be wrong) or is it usually?
i want to know where the steering column bush is and also whether there is a black rubber thingy (is this the steering column bush?) that is slipped over top of column before locking washer is forced on.
thanks for the responses so far
A:

There is no 'bush', it's the bearing in the lock housing
A:

HEY TREV16v I HAVE EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM HOW CAN I SOLVE IT
DO YOU KNOW HOW
A:

I put a MK3 one on mine to solve it, and it was exactly the same. But after I converted to PAS the play was gone, so either the rack or universal joint at the base of the column was at fault
A:

I've had something similar to this in my golf ever since i've had it, but the play seems to be in actually moving the steering wheel up and down within the column tube, not in and out towards you as if you were sat in the drivers seat.
Is this probably just the bearings within the column tube? is it had to take the column apart to fit new bearings (or ignition barrel housing in the case of the top bearing)?
Cheers
A:

Thats the play I had in mine, up & down. There was a bit of in and out movement, but only when the wheel was straight
