Does anyone know what the temperature range is for the gauge on a mk1 driver? and does it differ to the gauge on a GTI?

probably does differ but not that drastically. I cant remeber how mine (ex Mk1 driver with GTI engine) does at normal temps but I think it ran fairly central on the guage.

Do you ever have trouble with it in traffic or when it is stationary in general? I have just rebuilt the head on mine cos the temp was shooting up in traffic and it warped, I've beefed up the cooling system a bit but it seems to be doing the same thing while it is idling on my drive way.

hmm not really, I have an extra oil temp and pressure guage too for safties sake but never noticed anything untoward with either them or the water temp dial. I had a fresh radiator and a decent quality thermostat too (V.A.G.) as I've found cheap stats never open accuratly when tested on the cooker. Check the ignition timing is spot on as they can get a bit warm if they arent advanced enough.
