I've got mist or vapour of some kind coming out of the vents. It's great.
When the fan is turned off you can see it coming from the vents, then when you turn the fan on you get a cloud of the stuff! There is still heat coming through (more me warm really), and after a couple of miles it's like driving in a fog. Luckily I have a high tech cloth to clear the screen.
Does this sound like a heater matrix problem, or something else.

Get it fixed soon or else you will end up with scalded feet. It definitely sounds like the heater matrix.

Garages hate the job, its a real pita. VW used to do this as a recall (very dangerous if the matrix blows while driving) up until about 2 years ago when they stopped doing the work. Also co-incided with the heater matrix bypass valves being discontinued.

Its not, they were fitted as an extra safety measure. However, they are prone to faults, its only recommended that you remove them if they are faulty, as you cant get replacements from VW.

The valves fail with age stopping you getting any heat in the car. My '91 Driver never got them fitted - it was a VW panic recall - and so far 15 years and 130K with no problem. And IIRC the matrix you get now are Mk3 spec so the bypass isn't needed anyway.
