A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Hello all,
I have finally got of my back side and started working on my MK1. The car has been off the road for a seriously long time and I'm undertaking a full restoration.
Currently, I am tackling the brakes (calipers specifically). I want to powerder coat them. I have the following questions:
1. Will the powder coating take the maximum temperature that the calipers will reach?
2. What is the max temp that calipers can reach?
3. Will the coating stay adheared to the caliper as it constantly heats up and cools down again?
4. What temperatures are involved in the powder coating process?
5. Given the calipers reach (I assume high temperatures) the seals must be able to withstand the heat too. Given this, is there any reason why the caliper and seal cannot be placed in an oven together (during the powder coating process)? Answer obviously dependant on q4.
6. Will powder coated stuff be more protected than say just using high temp paint/ caliper paint?
I've got so many questions its a bit nuts and I don't want to over do it on my first post.
Thanks for looking,
D

Any takers? Someone must have knowledge of powder coating?
edit:
(oops... just realised i posted the reply with my brother's CGTi account.... ehh nevermind...)

I suppose no replies means no one have experience of powder coating and info on brake temperatures?
Any info will really be appreciated.

i use hamarite on my calipers so i guess powder coating would be fine to!!
A:
i guess it would be fine, just take the seal off and replace fwith ne ones once the coating is done!!!

Powder coating the calipers would be fine but you would definatly have to take the old seals out and replace with new ones ,i work for a company called Metokote ,
Hope this helps

Thanks guys,
My front calipers are band new so I don't fancy wrecking the seals and having to replace them. Will they definatley not survive the powder coating process?
@ Jayski, thanks for the link. I take it the internal mechansism will be fine?
I've decided to experiment on my original MK1 calipers and see what the seals look like after coating.

OK got the test caliper back. It looks pretty good and the rubber seal seems fine too. Is there anyway to test it (without getting it on a car)?
