Revs Driving Me Crazy

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hi there,
We have a MK2 1.8 8v Gti
The car has been 100% reliable until recently. When driving the revs sometimes dip, especially when coming up to junctions or roundabouts. Occasionally the revs drop so low that it cuts out completely. This makes driving in traffic certainly interesting!
Also when just ticking over the engine sometimes hunts both up and down - it certainly doesn't tick over smoothly!
We have had a couple of suggestions:
1) Distributer, cap and leads need changing
2) Idle control valve knackered
Has anybody out there got any suggestions or advice?
We are really struggling to sort this one out.
Thanks in advance

Id go with what has already been suggested mate.

I had exactly the same problem it turned out to be the isv and i tried 5 second hand ones but none of them made a difference until i brougth a brand new one from GSF plus it idled even better when i re-connected the two wires at the idle switch apperently these are known to keep falling off.

sounds exacly like a dodgy idle switch, or damaged wiring. Pop the bonnet and open/close the throttle, you should hear the idle switch click. If not, check the throttle cable isn't too tight. If that checks out, the throttle switch is underneath the throttle body, to get to it remove the inlet boot and use an angle screwdriver to loosen the mounts, then push it in till it clicks & tighten.
Since its suddenly started going wrong, it might be a snapped/damaged wire to the throttle switches, look at the plug round the back and follow the wires
