mk3 CL - GTI

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

i have a mk3 1.4cl 1993, i realy wanted a golf gti, but bthe insurance is stupidly high for me (only being 18) so if i put gti trim on my car, and a gti interior would that look a bit gay? or would it be fine? i know the power isnt going to be all there, but i have a few things in mind for a lil power boost!
and how hard is it to convert manual to electric windows? iv never actully tryed to do it, but if im puting gti trim, i believe they have electric windows
A:

get the gti interior, much more supporting and comfortable, just make sure its not worn/ripped.
electric windows is okay to fit, did it on my old 1.4 mk3 golf. you need to get the motors, loom and switches. there are some new kits by electric life which is oem, or you can get from scrappy.
A:

just go for the euro look, you already havent got the side skirts and gti trim so just spend all your money on some nice fat alloys and a decent drop it will look phat, get the gti interior if you wana cos it does add to the look.
i'm pretty ****ed right now but im sure some ppl will agree with me

with any luck one of the vw's in the scrappy would have come in with a fairly decent pair of 17's, long shot but i can hope lol, hen normaly sell them on rock bottom price, fingers crossed, if i put 17's on it whats a sensible lower? i still need to get over spped bumps tho, dorset is full of the f**king things!
A:

mate i used to have a one-four L. an ran 17's on it, pain in the ****! it made the car so slow it wasnt that fun to drive. if you still wanna go for them you will want to be lookin for an et of 38 a width of 7j and a set of low profile tyres like a 205/40/17 as not to rub, think u cud drop it about 30mm then, but not too sure of this!
ive jus upgraded to a 1.8 now, im 19 an insurance is such a b*****d. but i'm still optying for a set of 16's it gives the car a better stance imo. good dubbin!
A:

so it would be better on 16's i dont like 15's they look crap lol, but 16's i could prob handle, if i get 16's would a 30 / 40mm lower be ok without having to re-shape the arches?
A:

I would say to leave it. I had the 1.4 L and did a few things to it, alloys, induction kit, exhaust lowered it etc. It wasnt fast at all. As you said it wont have the power. Dont make your car look like something its not. And if it looks like a GTI and your a young driver you will notice most boy racers and older guys want to race you !
A:

yeah id say you could prob get away with a 35mm drop, if its still to high you can always drop it a bit more. stick to a 7j width of the wheels, as anything highter like a 9j you will definetly be lookin to flare them arches.
im after a set of sixteens but dont know what sort of et i have to get, cant find any1 on here that knows, help anyone!
A:

what do you mean you dont know what to get? style wise of actual measurements lol, go for multi spoke ... its the future :P i hate these 3 spoke wheels, and i dont particualy like the 5 spoke , but than thats just imo
A:

Just be careful. If you bought a 1.4CL for lower insurance you might find that lowered suspension, different wheels and spoilers will cost as much to insure as the real thing
A:

ive got a driver, low insurance + gti body work
A:

yeh well im going to stick with a cl untill march, when iv got a year under my belt, and im then going to get a gti
A:

will your insurance really come down much in 1 yr.??!!!
To go from a 1.4 to a gti will cost you a arm and a leg. if you only indend to keep the 1.4 until march wouldnt it be better to keep it standard (ish) an use the money you would spend on alloys etc toward a gti insurance? just a thought!!
A:

yes i have already thought about this now, i bought a gti 8 valve 1.8 the other day ... a right bargain, m going to get that all road worthy, it need a few things doing to it to get it spot on and then im plannig on selling the cl, puting the money from that as a downpayment and then paying the rest off monthly
A:

nice one!
i wasnt trying to sound patronising or be one of those people who just tries to spoil everyones ideas, only offering my thoughts!!!!!! only slighly jealous as for some reason i was still ****ing around with 1.3 fiestas @ 18 lol

1.3???? sheesh, you would have been a hero around here, being able to handle the extra grunt of those extra 200cc!!!
I bypassed all that small car carp tbh, my first car was a scirocco GTI, i was a local legend, lol.

haha we all have to start somewhere,
Personally i reckon everyone should start with a 1.0L if you learn how to drive a 1.0 45hp beast "properly" and in the most effective way you can, when you get a faster car you are less likely to stuff it into something whilst thinking " im a legend"!
A:

I agree, just like they restrict bike riders, car drivers should have to ride around in either small cars or restricted big cars imo.
I never thought i was a legend btw, it was just in the eyes of the teeny boppers around here
