Q:
i have heard that a mark 2 gearbox will go on mark 8v GTI model. so off i go and buy a mark 2 gearbox and take off my mark 3. when trying to fit the mark 2 box the centre shaft on the mark 2 is smaller than the mark 3!!!!! does any one now how to rectify the problem? will fitting the clutch plate and fly wheel from the mark 2 rectify the problem? help as catching the bus to wrk is really starting to annoy me!!!
A:
Yup, change the clutch and flywheel will allow the gearbox to fit, but i would just try and get another mk3 gearbox tbh, chances are it will be lower mileage.
A:
Just fit the MK2 clutch disc, don't swap the flywheel over.
The flywheel and pressure plates are matched between MK2 and MK3 cars. The MK2 parts use two 6mm locating pins to align the parts, and the MK3 parts use a single 7mm pin and a raised lip to align the parts, and they don't interchange.
You only need to fit a clutch disc from a MK2 8V car (210mm with a 22mm center diameter using 24 splines) to mate to the trans input shaft. The MK3 flywheel and pressure plate will mate fine. If you do use the MK2 flywheel, use a MK2 pressure plate. I'm not sure if it is the same over there, but a stock MK2 flywheel is about 12 pounds, and a MK3 is about 15 pounds, so you can save 3 pounds weight by using MK2 stuff.

Only 5 codes of 020 use a 24mm (28 spline) input shaft....the 3 codes from the MK3 2.0L cars (AMC, CHE, and DFQ) and then the 2 codes from the MK2 16V cars (AGB and 2Y). All the rest of the 020 trans use the smaller 22mm (24 spline) input shaft.
The bit about the pressure plate pins is explained a little more here in this pic I took of some factory papers...
