Fooked gearbox?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hi Chaps
I think the gearbox on my Mk2 16v has died - I was driving along (although not a full on rag for once!), came off a rounderbout and heard a shrapnel type noise under the car, very strong rubber smell and when I pulled away the clutch was just slipping...
I managed to pull over and the chassis was caked in oil - I'm not a gearbox wizz but was wondering if this is total gearbox failure or a seal gone as the gears were still engaging and could still drive.
If it is kanckered, should I consider a cable change box? I've heard they are a bit more hardcore!

I'd say you've lost a diff rivit thru the housing! You'll have to take the box out to replace the clutch anyway, so I'd look out for another MK2 16v or MK3 rod change gearbox. You can fit a MK2 8v box, but you'll need an 8v clutch friction disc. Keep the 16v prerssure plate if its in good nick though

Cheers RubJonny,
The clutch was fairly new - Would I need to change it anyway if its contaminated?
Any idea of decent garages around Essex way who could so this for me?
A:

If it's had a liberal coating of gearbox oil, I doubt it can be saved
Might be cleanable with white spirit etc, but I wouldn't bother. No idea on garages, if it was me I'd do it meself
If you do get a new gearbox put in, make sure you/they change the input shaft seal, and the pushrod bush & seal at the same time.

Cheers for the advice - Much appreciated!

You were absolutely right RubJonny - The diff had a big old hole in the housing! I've got all the bits you suggested so a big thank you matey!
