This might be a daft question (or three) but how can I tell which gearbox I have?
The car is an 86 GTI 8V (EV)
Also do these repair kits on e-bay really cure the famous crunching second gear on MK2s? And are those weighted shift thingies worthwhile?

you've got an 020 gearbox, don't know about those ebay kits, weighted shift rods are good. Don't pay for a fancy one get a vw one for a mk3 8v gti.

Thanks for that, is the Mk3 shift rod just a straight swap?

Bit of filing of the bottom corner to clear the gearbox casing if you have a short shift kit as well.
