A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I'm going to take a guess that this is why my gear selection's gone a bit wobbly:
But I'm wondering if something's dropped off as I don't remember seeing anything white and clean before
And I can't help but notice it appears to be absent from a mention in Haynes.
Does anyone know from the pic if something is missing, what needs replacing, and what kind of job it is?
Cheers

The outer golf ball thing that used to be wrapped around that splined center chunk has fallen off, and it looks to be laying around the side still. Pics of the linkage, as well as lots of other linkage info can be found here

u see that manky yellow ring....thats what fell off!
this place does replacements and free postage if you mention the forum
or you could build it up with epoxy glue
A:
hehe too slow

Thanks very much for the replies and the links, Broke and PB (again)
It actually looks like it just sits in the 'cup' of the selector lever, so it would appear to be a fairly straightforward job, if they actually exist (touches wood).
Seems like a good opportunity to upgrade the bush too!
Thanks again.

youl need to reach under that metal rod and remove the circlip...then wriggle the rod out so you can fit the ball

Yeah, I clocked the circlip groove [pats self on back ] in the pics, just wondered if it's easier from underneath. Don't suppose it matters as it'll be a few days before I can get to it in any case. Another job for the weekend.
And an opportunity to use my yet unused new circlip pliers

VW can't order the bit coz they don't have a pic of the optional bush - the one facing downwards in the inset top right here:
Can anyone help with a part number please as VW have suggested I take it off, take it down to them, and they'll 'see what they can do'!!
Caffyns VW Eastbourne. Twits

Well it's done, but the replacement was hard enough to get
This is from a Mk3 and the bush sits about 1/3" higher than the old one. Doesn't look to be a problem until you get to 5th when it's close to the edge of the selector:
But it hasn't popped out, so we'll see how we go.
New bush didn't want to come off, otherwise I'd have bastidised it!
Put a weighted shift rod on while I was at it
Oh, and the bonnet got changed this afternoon, so no more vent!!

Is that what I should have got as opposed to what I have Darren?
What I have is 1H0 711 173.

Im sure i read somehwere that vw only sell the bush attached to the whole relay shaft. Iirc its meant to be quite expensive.
Could you not take the bush off the mk3 shaft and pop it on your mk2 one?
Mines quite worn and could do with replacing... Where did you get the mk3 shaft from?
A:
Mk3 one came from VW, was £30 and yes, it's a whole unit. There's something stopping the bush from coming off and I didn't want to force it in case I had to take it back.
As it is I'm relatively happy - it went on okay and seems to only contact the bush at its widest circumference. Would be nice to have it as it should be though.

Sorry, yeah that number I gave is what you should have.

Cheers Darren & Speedy
What a dilemma. Think I might try Phil Hall's bodge in the other thread so I can keep the car going while I take the 'new' bit back and have a go at getting the right bit this time.
Not particularly impressed that my local VW main agent have been so unhelpful over this

Been working in a main dealer parts department for 9 years now - I still get suprised about the number of parts people out there who don't give a sh*t!
A:
You can swap the complete ball & white centre over, it just clips on.
I've got a MK3 bush on my relay shaft
Edit: I put together a complete linkage FAQ as well
A:
Hey RJ. I know that FAQ
Does the bush pop off the Mk3 relay shaft easily then? There was something stopping it coming off just by pulling it alone - and I mean really pulling it - I'm one of the most ham-fisted people I know when it comes to using that little bit too much force!

I used a pair of pliers on the top of the shaft and the bottom of the bush if you get me? You could also try levering it off underneath. It helped that both units were a bit worn and not brand new though!
If you have a bench vice, you could pop it in with the bush up against the jaws then tap the top metal bit sticking out with a hammer.

Did exactly that. Gave up first tap of my hammer. 15 minutes start to finish, job done
Could be placebo effect, but it feels much better than with the shorter Mk3 unit on it.

yeah i bet the mk3 one woulnt be all the way in the finger (steady!) So you'll get a wee bit more play. Or something.
Glad its sorted anyway
