Hello fella
Need a little help here.
Got a MK3 16v (my first GTI) and the clutch has failed. only happened yesterday, when I got under it to see if a could spot a problem.... i can't find the master cylinder. or at least can only find one. which I'm guessing is for the breaks.
just wondering if anyone can tell if it's a shared cylinder and if anyone has a linkage to a site with any info about this sort of problem?!?!?

IIRC the master is on the bulkhead and the slave is on the 'box.

I am baffled There appears only to be one master cylinder mounted on the bulkhead which I assume to be that for the brakes, as it contains a level switch. Surely I should see two master cylinders?

tbh mate I can't remember, without having a look. The master cyl, is near the bulkhead though and the slave is on the box and they do share the same fluid. you can see the bleed nipples on the box. When you say its failed, whats happened?

What happened is this.
I drive along and my it becomes very stiff going into 3rd. the travel in the pedal becomes very long and the bite moves from the top of the travel to the bottom. However something else odd happens as the bite seems to be in two place, i.e there is bite at the bottom of the travel, it slips and final engages right at the top. So I think "time to get this home" drive a mile or so, the problem is intermitant. Then I pull to a T junction, stop, try for 1st. oops... will not engage, any gear and there is no "feel" at all to the pedal
and that about sums it up.

there are also hyd parts in the pedal box.
i recommend you bleed the slave at the clutch end (just take the slave out to check its state)
eliminate it bit by bit.
