Not totally, no. Even when I try to drain it fully on the bench, spinning it around on the rotating stand, it won't drain totally empty.
I guess if I drain out the oil through the side plug and then put 0.5 of a ltr back in through the speedo gear hole then that should make it about right ?

Just an update...
Drained off the excess via the side hole and put 1/2 ltr back in via the speedo hole, had 300ml (0.3 ltr) left ! So would have been overfilled by 300ml.

only just noticed this thread, sounds like the whining noise from the box may be incorrect backlash between either the gears themselves, or the crownwheel and pinion.

It just started to get noisy one day and sounded to me and others like diff bearings, just had all new (genuine) fitted and it's still there...
