A&Q about 350Z
Q:

hey gus wounder if any 1 can point me in the right direction today i shattered my gearbox on my mk2 2ltr 8v(2e) so i would like to know which gearboxes wil fit the engine with no flywheel change etc i know were there is a gear box removed from a g reg 1800 8v golf gti will this bolt straight on???
cheers

can anyone help need to know asap
A:

Yes... I assume that'll be the same as the one you broke.
Any 020 box from a big block Mk2 should fit, but the ratios in a GTI one would be better, unless you do lots of miles, in which case the 4+E ratios from a driver/1.8 GL would be good for motorway driving, although would cost you some acceleration.
If you use a 16v gearbox you'll need to change the clutch friction plate to suit, although a new clutch is always worth thinking about when you change a box anyway.
It's worth checking the code on the bottom of the broken box, but assume it was a standard Mk2 one.
A:

no the box i broke was a mk3 box think ive sorted it now i tryed to fit the mk2 flywheel and clutch but the flywheel has 2 may dowls so i couldnt be arsed to take 1 out so im running a mk2 8v gti gearbox mk2 8v friction plate and mk3 flywheel is this going to work
my old box was totaly shattred mind u ill see if i can take some pics and post them just for te comical value if nothing else
A:

If it had a MK3 box before, the only one which will fit stright on no messing about, is a MK2 16v box.
If you want to use a MK2 8v box, you'll need an 8v GTI friction disc. You can use a MK2 or MK3 flywheel, you just have to have a matching pressure plate as you now know the pressure plates have different dowls on
If your old pressure plate is ok, you can just shove the friction disc in and leave it at that.
You might want to get a complete MK2 setup as apparently the flywheel is a bit lighter?

cheers for all the help guys the box is in and working tho it feels a little bit sloppy compared to my old gear box and sometimes wont go into reverse and struggles to go into 1st 3rd n 5th mostly 1st is the problem it dont like to go in till i lift the clutch a little any ideas could it be oil shortage any help as i say will be great
A:

have a read thru my gear linkage FAQ post, it sounds like you need to renew your bushes, including the housing under the car
A:

ummmm might do maybe but it was fine with the mk3 gearbox it felt nice and tight its only been sloppy since the mk2 box was fitted any ideas?
A:

did you swap all the linkage brackets off the old box?
A:

as far as i can remember i did yeh it was a right mess on fitting the box without taking the engine out but id say im almost 100% sure its all of the bits off the mk3 box
A:

Ok, check the little lever thats bolted to the gearbox itself, the one that actually selects the gears. On my GTI I had a short shifter fitted and I didn't notice! That might explain it?
Other than that, it probably just needs re-aligning
A:

I'd change the bushes anyway - it's bound to need it.... and check that the relay shaft ball didn't fall off while you were working in there.
A:

just my 2p worth but if you are killing gearboxes, then why not put an 02a in?
much stronger IMHO
also much less likely to throw gear oil past the clutch release push rod seal, being that you do away with the @rse about face clutch arrangement and ever so slightly easier to lighten the flywheel since machinists are less confused by the more conventional 02a item (i exaggerate a bit there, but still......)
did my ADY 2l 8v Mk2, 2 years ago and never looked back.
i was using an 020 a year on road rallies.
I tried a recon, which was ok for a bit but died eventually then used to pick them up cheap from the scrappy as this was the cheapest way. a recon would have cost me 4 or 5 used boxes from the scrappy.
I eventually got bored with having the box out all the time, so went to an 02a out of a passat 16v using corrado brackets and the Seat clutch release mech.
Since the 02a was built for the 1.5 golf 1 then i figure that there is only so far you can push it, especially if you are on a budget. Since the 02as seem to blow up less often, their 2nd hand value is lower.......
Anyway, just my opinion.
A:

yeh was thinking about the o2a option earlyer so wot will i need to buy and is it a straight frward swap
A:

Find a seat ibiza if you can, they have a linkage on top which converts the hydro clutch to cable operation. Then you need a Cable shifter from a MK2 Golf, Corrado, MK3 etc. Fit that to your centre tunnel and hook up to your gearbox. Sc0rian has just done this to his MK2
A:

which clutch and flywheel will i need tho? do i need to change them or will my 2ltr 8v 1 be ok
A:

clutch you match to the gearbox, fly will need to be from a cable change car. Pinch it along with the gearbox if you can
A:

im gonna try to
