A&Q about 350Z
Q:
i am putting a mark 2 8v box on a mark 3 8v golf GTI. which of the following clutches do i need??
210 mm with 24 splines and a 22mm diameter?
or
a 190mm with 24 splines and a 20.5mm diameter?
A:
You need corresponding clutch and flywheel for the gearbox you are using.
A:
are you sure i need the fly wheel?
was told i didnt need that as they are the same on mark 2 and mark 3
A:
I think you need the clutch to go with the mk2 box whilst retaining your mk3 flywheel, not the mk2 one.
The mk2 and 3 flywheels have different locating pin arrangements I think. Go to broke's website I'm sure its there and if it aint I'm sure he'll make a post and put you straight.

You're correct, the MK2 and MK3 flywheels and pressure plates differ in the alignment pin size and locations...
Use a 210mm clutch disk, 22mm, 24 splines, for the MK2 8V car.
Pick a flywheel to use....the MK2 is about 12lbs, and the MK3 is about 15lbs....if you use a MK3 flywheel, use a MK3 pressure plate. If you use a MK2 flywheel, use a MK2 pressure plate.
The thing to look out for are the alingment pins.....and some early MK3 boxes retained the dual pins of the MK2 cars, at least over here.
MK2 8V and Mk2 16V flywheels are the same.

sorry lads i am completely thick and you have to spell this out for me. this is how i am interpreting it tell me if i am wrong.
I CAN use a mark 2 Golf GTI 8v Gearbox in a Mark 3 GTI 8V engine using a mark 2 clutch (210mm clutch disc, 22 mm, 24 spline) whilist retaining the mark 3 flywheel and pressure plate. mine is a very early mark 3 on a J reg by the way. is that correct???
i have been going on this forum for 3 weeks and i have bought wrong parts of ebay, got confused and broke my toe when dropping the gear box on it!! gonna sell the golf and get a robin reliant!!! less trouble

Bingo
However the mk2 flywheel and pressure plate assembly is lighter and would make the engine rev a bit more freely if you were to use that.

Crickey I never thought I'd be giving correct advice about gearboxes a few weeks ago. I must be learning something from you Broke!!

the latest instalement of **** up street!! there is a new problem. there is 3 different types of clutch for the Mark 2 8v GTI. i have no idea of the reg or engine number of the car i got the gearbox from so i have no idea which one i need any suggestions!!!
A:
I've not heard that, accounding to AVS there is only one.
, advantage of the Sachs clutch kit is it includes everything you need, new pressure plate bolts, clutch spline grease etc.
Before you part with your hard earned though, let us know the gearbox code of the box you plan to use, thats the most important thing you need to know when choosing a clutch kit! You never know if the origianl gearbox has been swapped at some point in its life too, so its always a good idea to double check.
If I were you I'd keep it all MK2 8v, you know where you are then. Plus it means you don't have to mix & match clutch kits whenever you need to change the clutch!
When I did my MK2 swap I used:
MK2 16v 2y gearbox
MK2 16v 210mm, 28 spline clutch kit
MK2 8v/16v lightened flywheel
I went with a 16v box simply because a perfect condition one came up close by cheap

I knew that advice was right anyway, cos it's more or less a quote from you a while back, lol.
Nice site btw Broke, i spent a good while reading through it. Next job = gearbox oil change and to make sure there's enough oil in it, i like my 5th gear and don't want to loose it, lol.
