Q:
My MK1 8v gearbox jammed in 3rd gear while accelerating away from a petrol station today, so I had to drive all the way home in 3rd gear .
If you press the clutch pedal down the gears disengage, but you can't change gear.
All the gear shift linkages look fine, so it looks like something internally in the g'box has jammed.
Has anyone else has this problem before?
Is there an easy fix this this?
TIA

It sounds like you've possibly over-selected 3rd. The sliding synchronizer sleeve moves too far past the locking keys for 3rd/4th sync hub, and the sliding sleeve gets jammed and won't come back.
You can pop the linkages off and fool with the bracket on the trans that the linkages attach to, in an attempt to get it to pop out of 3rd, but if it won't pop out, the box has to be removed, split open, and the problem sorted. With it stuck in gear, the selector would need driven out, so any parts damaged in that process would need replaced too.
The sync hub can develop cracks in the corners of the slots for the sync locking keys, and this allows them to move too far, and allows the sync sliding sleeve to over shift. VW changed the design of the hubs reducing the chances of those cracks, but early boxes had the old square cuts that were prone to cracking.

I thought so. Guess what I'll be doing today then!

Your gonna find that it's a right bas7ard to get the selector shaft out of the box as it's stuck in gear.
I've done a few like this and have ended up replacing quite alot. You can't even get the casing apart usually as the selector shaft is holding all the forks in place.

I've not actually had to do this procedure yet, but I've read about it. Am I correct in assuming that when they mean drive the selector out, they mean they want the roll pin to shear that holds the selector finger on the shaft?
The finger would be engaged in the tabs of the forks when it was in gear, and the finger is pinned to the selector shaft, so that pin would just about have to shear, unless the finger did....and neither of them are very thin.
I assume it would take quite a bit of force to drive the selector out
