I have an MK3 GL and recently I was driving and my 5th gear kept kicking "popping me out" into neutral. I continued to go back into 5th gear and finally my 5th gear popped me back into neutral and when I went to put it back into 5th, the gear just revs like it dissappeared. Also the engine light now comes on...any help woudd be great I am at a loss.

Have you checked the trans fluid level lately? I'm not sure if your box is an 020, 084, etc....but if it is an 020 like over here, then I'd venture a guess 5th has died from low oil.
I have 020 info pages on my site at that cover the fluid change and also a page that shows what happens to 5th gear if it is low on oil.
It could be something like a broken plastic dogbone linkage piece, look the linkage over carefully first.
I've got no guess on the Engine light, honestly.

Yes, I think so, but it'll be expensive. Most people source one from an old trans or damaged trans.
If 5th stripped out, the steel that was the splines will be in the rest of the trans, and it'll eat the bearings and other parts up sooner. The only way to get them all out is to strip the box and rebuild it.

Cheaper to get a whole box from the scrapper I'd think. Is that a 1.8 engine? If so, it's probably an 020 box with 4+E(?) ratios
