its a 5-speed, mk3 1.4 96
ive been having trouble selecting gears, i can get it into all gears with a lot of effort and struggle, 1,2,3 and reverse are an absolute pig ! i cant drive it, its got so bad
any ideas?

do the gears engage fine with the engine switched off and the clutch pedal on the floor ??

loadsavalves, what does it mean if gearbox slots easily when engine is off but struggles when engine is on? Mine is a git to put in to 2nd when the weather and engine are cold...

if the car goes into gear ok with the engine off then gearbox should be ok, If it's a real pig to get in when engines running with foot on clutch, that would suggest the clutch is at fault. Second gear being a git when cold is quite normal, you could try some semi synthetic gearbox oil that helps a bit.

more problems!!!
out doing the car till 10.30, replacing all the linkage bushes with a mate in the freezing cold. put it all back together and now it wont even try to get into 2nd 4th, but will just about go into 1st 3rd 5th. something appears to be hitting the linkage preventing it from reaching the bottom gears 2nd and 4th.
used the proper tool to align it too.

had a look at it on the ramp at work today simon tried doing something with the clutch cable and now it will go into what feels like all the gears but its not actually in gear, it wont move anywhere with the clutch pedal released
