A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Hi All,
My brother in law has an '02 reg Mk4 Golf TDI PD100 and recently had it remapped at Dubsport, not sure on the power output now but it's something like 240lbsft torque and guess what, the original clutch (about 100k miles on it) doesn't like it and has started slipping badly!
So, he wants to replace the clutch and I have offered to help. Will the job be vaguely similar to replacing my Mk2 clutch, I did that a few weeks back and it wasn't that bad a job in the end. Any special tools needed for the Mk4? Any tips? I take it the gearbox will weigh more than my Mk2 one so perhaps an engine crane would help as I found the Mk2 one fairly difficult to lift back into place even with an assistant!
The other issue is what clutch to use? I know the Sachs uprated ones are recommended but £500 seems very steep. GSF sell a standard clutch kit for this car at around £130 + vat, would this handle the increase in power/torque? I think he unlikely to mod the car much further. Any other clutch recommendations?
He's called GSF and they reckon that 90% of the time the flywheel (dual mass) also needs replacing when the clutch slips? Is this likely? A flywheel is another £200 or so!
If the flywheel does need replacing is he better going for a non dual mass one using VR6 and/or G60 parts? Can anyone explain what's involved and whether this is worth doing? Are the parts to do this more expensive than a standard new flywheel as above?
Any help much appreciated - I never really work on anything newer than a Mk2 so this is all a bit confusing!
Cheers
Stu

is that how much GFS are charging for a duel mass, bloody cheap, 5/600 @ stealers +Vodka And Tonic
if he has the 5 speed box, a vr6/tdi/g60 flywheel & clutch should be the same spline patern (something I'm using in the mk 2)
since clutches are rated in torque, it's a grey area but a std VR6 is rated 190ish
very simliar to mk 2 (fitted with a cable change box ) but a bit more room to get it out, lifting will need 3 normal relisticaly

Can you not use a clutch for a PD150?

Cheers Crispy - forgot to say, it's a 5-speeder. Do you think there is any point going for a different type of flywheel then or will a new dual mass one be okay with this kind of torque? Don't want to make extra work and if GSF prices for the flywheel are okay then fair enough, but obviously don't want to do the job and have it fail again in a few thousand miles!
Will a standard Sachs clutch hold this kind of power for long? I've read about people saying standard ones are fine, others that they have packed in soon after a re-map?!?
G-Man - Good idea but I think the PD150 clutch is a bigger diameter as they are 6-speed aren't they? Not sure though to be honest, as I say, I'm a Mk1 and Mk2 man!

The only reason I say is because my 1.4 TDI apparently uses the same clutch as a Polo PD 115 so people get the re-map as the clutch is used on the larger more powerful units.
Best checking see if not the PD 150 try the PD 130.
But good luck on the clutch change, i used to touch my mk2 but never my newer car!

the 1400 / possibly the lower BHP pd's are about 230ish with the 6 speed boxes, clutch are 240mm
