A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Im Startingto Think About Fitting A 20 Valve Turbo Engine Into My Mk2. Just Wondering If The Engine Mounts Are In The Same Place? I Know That The Engine From A Mk4 Golf Will Go Straight On, But Is This The Same For The Audi Engines (eg Bam Engine)?
A:
BAM will drop straight in. Swap audi drivers side mount for original mk2 mount which bolts onto new engine the same as the old mk2 lump.
A:
Thanks, it will uprate engine mounts anyway. i just have a few more questions!
1) Which is the better injection system to start with? 16v k-jet, or the 8v digifant? it will be a post 90 mk2 that it goes into
2) I read somewhere "qp engineering" and another company whose names escapoes me at the mo,make a kit (loom and ecu I think) to link the agu 150 bhp engine to the mk2 8v, does anyone make a kit to fit the bam engine? if not does anyone know if its possible to adapt these kits?
3) Should i uprate the driveshaft's?
4) Is there a specific gearbox i should use?
Thats it for now, until i can think of anything else i may need to know!
A:
1) Both ok
2) QPENG do a plug & play kit for the BAM
3) G60 shafts are probably strongest?
4) 02J (Mk4 GTI) will bolt straight on, strong and cheap
A:
You'll struggle to stretch digi 2 or K-jet to running a turbo application. AFAIK the most feasible options are to:
a) Butcher the existing loom / make your own to run on std. management
b) Use the QPeng loom and ECU which seems like a nice tidy choice
A:
Ah Yes Qpeng, That Was The Other Name I Couldnt Remember.
Mk4 Gti 6 Speed Box?
A:
if you are going to use a BAM engine make sure you have a 16v K-jet fuel pump.
digifant pumps don't run enough pressure.
A:
i want that engine as it runs my target power standard, i will probs upgrade at a later date, but im used to 16v mk2 at mo so i will need to get used to the step up in power first.
i take it i should get an oil cooler as well as an intercooler?
A:
You could use an oil cooler as well but you are going to be pretty tight for space as it is depending on whether you increase your radiator size and how big your intercooler will be. You can get a bloody big radiator which will help your engine cooling no end. The one used for MK2s with air con is huge and available from euro car parts
A:
Yes you want to run a Corrado VR6 with A/C rad & the twin fan setup that goes with it. It's fookin huge and drops straight in even used the Mk2 gti mounts & rubbers.
More than capable of cooling a 20v Turbo. I don't see the point in running an oil to air oil cooler as even with 3 laps back to back round the 'Ring in July (35oC) water was running max temp of 96oC oil max of 108oC
A:
so is the standard gti radiator not big enough then, if so then it would be simpler to leave that in place - althought at the same time I would like to get the conversion right first time!? If so a 13 row oil cooler will fit next to the standard one - wont it?
I plan to source a g60 intercooler, probably getting rare at the moment with the number of people doing these conversions I know. assuming I can get hold of one of these, what do I do for the hoses? do they need to be custom fabricated or is there a company that makes them (e.g. samco)?
I was thinking of including new gaskets, has anyone tried "ferriday" one? is it worth the money over oe gaskets?
should I be getting a dump valve too?
my shopping list seems to be at the minuit as follows;
bma 20vt engine, mk4 gti 6 speed box, qpeng ecu/loom, g60 driveshafts, g60 intercooler, uprated engine mounts, exhaust manifold (qpeng make one to fit i think), and an oil cooler (maybe).
A:
Also to add to the list is the guages etc to watch the engine once its running!
A:
Am using the standard 8valve rad on my mk2 20vt and had no problems with cooling even thro' the hot summer just gone. Have got twin Pacet fans on it for cooling.
Go for Emerald ECU and get it mapped at Emerald. First class job. Wire it in yourself. Comes with instructions and cheaper than Qpeng .
A:
wouldnt the qpeng be better for simplicity tho? im not great with engine electrics. are the fitting instructions with the emerald comprehensive? i read in another forum subject that dta are better - any oppinions on this?

You can use a Megasquirt 'n spark- extra as well. There is a working example .
A:
thanks, ill have a look.
is it possible to fit too big an intercooler? or is it a case of "the bigger the better"?

Yes you can which would cause a large pressure drop. When choosing I/C a good way is to look at models that had very good designs that can suit you. On My car I have a EVO1-3 FMIC behind the grill. I use a OEM 16v radiator and OEM fan. on the offside I brought the rad more towards the engine and mounted on custom brackets. At the current loads my charge temps are 46degC max when outside is 28degs and running at 7000r/min.
A:
so the safe option would be a g60 or similar intercooler then.
A:
Dump valve? should i uprate the OE one? with a recirculating DV? any reccomendations?

You mean Corrado one or the Rallye one. Rallye one if you can afford it of get it from a friend

Recirculating DV if you are running a OEM ecu that has a MAF. For MAP applications you can run vent it. Type and quality depends on emitted sound ( if using MAP) reliabilitly and boost levels.
A:
im thinking of using the QPEng ecu loom kit to fit it. i want reliability for now, the sound isnt important- tho fun, im more interested in longevity of the engine as it will be my daily driver too.
A:
ive just read on another post, that the gearbox mount is awkward on fitting mk4 box onto mk2, is this correct? if so what do i need to change to sort this?

Where have you read that? It's a piece of p155 to fit a Mk4 (02J) 'box. Corrado G60 mount bracket and std Mk2 mount. Done it myself, easy peasy. 02M - 6 speed is the pain to fit.
A:
This one, which i think you replied to vw boff. just got a lil panick on there is all.
if i were to get a 6 spd g box, what hassle's would i encounter in fitting it and getting it to work?
