measure the width of the impellers
believe the 42 refers to the inlet being 42mm.
i might be wrong though,
cheers toyotec, great reading!

No prob bro!.
"42" is an A/R ratio of 0.42. It is a relationship between the a crossectional area of the discharge pipe/turbine nozzle and a radius that extends from the centre of a compresssor/turbine wheel to the centre of the this crossectional area. This is independant to terms "trim" and wheel size. You may also see that the turbine may have ".48" casted in the housing as well.
In turbines the smaller this relationship the quicker the spool for a given size of engine.
and spec turbo.
I have seen some older Nissans VG20ET engines (found in JDM C32 Laurel) with VNT turbines allowing then to vary A/R for quick spooling (small A/R) and higher flow for maximum power (larger A/R). This type of technology is being implemented on modern diesels.
Good reading "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell pp 32-34.
